We gave them 6 or 8 helicopters and $50 million in aid within 24 hours of the earthquake. Much better response than Katrina... 10/11/2005 10:10:18 AM |

One theory I heard from my South Asian Politics prof is that Americans are just getting numbed to huge disasters.
I mean, we gave a shitton to the tsunami even though it affected a bunch of countries most Americans have never heard of. What was the last ginormous disaster before that? How long ago was it? The only thing that leaps to mind was 9/11, but that was a good four years ago. And before that, seems like it must've been a while. Then we gave a shitton to New Orleans because it was in our country and was still pretty bad.
Pakistan's earthquake had the misfortune to be the fourth big disaster in as many years, and no matter how many people died, it's just harder for Americans as a whole to care any more. The fact that it is a fairly obscure country to many peoples' minds may not have even entered into it. 10/27/2005 4:23:09 AM |
