Whith the highly anticipated presentation by Jobs tommorow, do you think it will be a Video iPod? I personally hope so because that would be a huge let down if it is some lame update of the iPod, or a new processor. Here's to hoping for a vPod. I searched the board and couldnt find this topic so please no "you are a newb" posts.

if all the video ipod plays is quicktime it would be a total waste.

Indeed; but it is tricky.

I hardly see Microsoft (or Real for that matter) cutting Apple a deal on a license to decode WMV formats.

i dont take much stock in portable video players of any sort.

Its dumb to design a device to only play video, when there are so many video formats and it can't support all of them.

Another reason i like multifunction devices like pda/cellphones.

If i want a wmv player i can get one.

if i want a divx player i can get one.

etc...

If i want a wmv player for my video ipod im SOL and i have to rely on Apple to make one.

Whereas with a pda i'd have to rely on a myself or others to make a player.

one word... archos

video ipod would be a waste, it's taking a DAP and making it a DVP, which it wasn't meant to do

I'm not sure I'd like watching video on a two inch screen, if it had video out then it'd be worthwhile

Well, There is a leaked photo which looks like an iPod with a bigger screen and a click wheel the size of the Nano's wheel. the link is http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000067061993/

hahaha quicktime as a portable format...hahahahahah.

vPod is just the Apple fanboy's last grasp at keeping their beloved company afloat. Even if it's the best pvp on the market (which, unless they change form factors and support at least divx/xvid/open mp4 as well as avi, mpeg and a few other wrappers, isnt going to happen), who is going to buy one? PSP plays video, on a bigger screen, longer, and is drastically cheaper.

apple is only interested in itunes revenue
edit. ok they have 2 revenue streams but it is not worth it for them to release the video ipod until it will contribute to both of them.

On the bright side, anyone who gets one will be able to watch as many movie trailers as they want on their vPod.

I thought it had already been leaked that there wasn't ogoing to be a video iPod, that it's going to be a higher-capacity iPod (80GB) with a different color selection (silver and black instead of white)

^ yeah, I thought it was stupid when Noen said that too.

Apple just posted a record-breaking profit for the quarter just ending. Apple will likely stay a niche company, but they aren't 'struggling to stay afloat'.

The rumor-mill has been all over the place the last couple of days trying to guess what will come out of today's presentation.
Why do we need to start this thread just one day before the actual announcement? Can't we wait to see what is actually announced before we start bickering about it? It's just a few hours away...

I have no idea if it's gonna be a vPod or not. I have no idea if it'll be a good idea or not.
But I'm not gonna comment on it until it actually happens.

Why do people give Apple such a hard time?

They have always made a reliable product that fills a specific need.

I've used Macs and Apples since I was around 6 years old. I started really using Windows based machines when I was about 17. I was never frustrated with a computer until I started using Windows machines. All through high school I had a Mac SE running OS 7.1 or something like that. It never, ever crashed, ever, and performed flawlessly well beyond the lifespan of any Windows computer I've ever used.

I have friends who are professional graphic designers and they will never use anything but a Mac. My uncle, who was a lead designer at IBM for PowerPC processors, swears by Macs.

I just got my first iPod, a Nano, last week, and I am very impressed. I have screwed around with other MP3 players and nothing compares. They are easy to use and the controls are very intuitive. Not too complicated, but have plenty of features to keep you happy.

If you hate on Apple, that's fine, you are entitled to your opinion. For every fanboy out there who loves Apple, there is an anti-fanboy who is just as opposed to Apple...

iLounge Exclusive: New iPod revealed
iLounge has snapped exclusive photos of advertisements for the new iPod, which will be introduced today at Apple's "One more thing" event in San Jose, California. The familiar silhouette posters clearly show an all-new iPod model with a noticeably larger display, approximately 2.5 to 2.6 inches diagonal, compared to the current full-size iPod's 2-inch screen. Also of note, the headphone jack has been moved from the top-center to the top-right side of the device. More photos on iLounge's flickr page

it's so obvious that this will play videos

well that requires flash memory to be cheaper. I think they just need to make the nano expandable with sd or mmc and have a storage area inside the player for the extra cards.

only you're not REALLY "carrying it around," liar. And actually, you have basically an infinite supply considering shoutcast stations all over the world

but yeah

also let me say that if this new ipod does play video, that's great, but I won't be buying it.

fred:

DG and I have setup our own personal shoutcast stations at home that we just run our whole music library through.

We connect to the stream via our Treos.

I don't know if DG does the same, but if I don't like the song playing, I have a web interface for the SC_serv that can move to the next song in the queue that I can also access from the treo while listening.

UPDATE: Bad news — Apple conveniently picked a venue in a cellular dead zone, which means no real-time reports from the keynote (there’s no WiFi, either). We’ll have reports as quickly as we can get them to you. Also, to save server resources and bandwidth we’ve temporarily closed comments. Thanks for your patience!

Ok, so we’re still having issues, but here’s what we’ve got so far. Apparently there’s a Salling Clicker replacement for the Mac—a Mac remote, as it were. It’s called FrontRow. It’s a Bluetooth device, and apparently looks a lot like a shuffle.

We also have word of a new, flatter iMac with built-in iSight. This guy will have a larger drive, FrontRow, and will cost the same as the current 17-inch model—ships today.

The new iMac lineup prices are as follows: $1299 US for the 1.5GHz 17-incher, $1799 US for the 2.1GHz 20-incher.

New iPod announced! The new iPod, as speculated, features video capabilities and the wider display, but it’s still a music-first device.

The device will feature a 2.5-inch display, QVGA resolution (320 x 240), and will MPEG-4 h.264 (natch), and presumably Quicktime.

The new iPod will be 30% thinner than the current 20GB iPod (making it 0.44-inches thick—say wha?), and will feature a 60GB version (which should be thinner than the current 0.63-inch thick 20GB iPod), and editions of both in black.

The 20GB should go for $299, and the 60GB for $399. They’ll be shipping next week.

What’s the device named, you ask? The iPod. That’s it, just The iPod. Well spare you the Prince jokes. The iPod will have TV out.

Stevie has iTunes 6.0 up there—only about a month after introducing iTunes 5.0.

iTunes 6.0 will also feature video and the iTunes Music Store will feature Fairplay DRMed video downloads (big surprise, right?).

At launch over 2,000 music videos will be made available at a cost of $1.99 apiece. You can download iTunes 6.0 starting today.

Oh, and one more thing…

It’s not only music videos you can buy. No, Apple’s set up to allow you to purchase TV shows for $1.99 apiece. Get Desperate Housewives or four other ABC shows premiering on iTunes at two bucks an ep. Videos are native QVGA resolution.

More details to come…

Wonder how long it will take to break the DRM on the TV shows. $1.99 an episode is a lot less than buying boxed set DVDs...
