Ok short back story:

I picked up this DFI 754 board used from Noen with one stick (512mb) of ram and was pleased with it at first but it left a little bit to be desired as far as speed . I came from a HT p4 so maybe hyperthreading gave me the impression of a more responsive system. Anywho i talked to tyler about it and he assured me i would get more speed by using two sticks in dual channel (double memory speed , my intel had it). So i get another stick, put it in and am still lacking the speed im used to.

Is there anything else i can do, or should i just upgrade?

oh yeah, i was also told the soundcard could be to blame (its built in).

What exactly is slower?

Onboard sound hurts performance a little bit, but it depends on what you are doing on the PC.

Onboard sound only effects performance in an appreciable way if you're trying to run a 5.1 or 7.1 system with it. Regular stereo makes no difference.

well, the memory controller on the processor is only single channel, so there's nothing to gain by running "dual channel" memory. it's not even really dual channel, the memory controller only sees one big bank of memory. more ram is always helpful, but that won't speed response time. if you're attached to the board, since 754 is discontinued, pick up one of the clawhammer a64's with the 1mb l2 cache (I believe it's clawhammer, but I'm not sure).

That's the main difference between 754 and 939-- dual channel support.

You could also try overclocking the CPU if you so dare. DFI boards generally beg to be OCed.

It's hard to say what part is running "slow" without doing some MB benchmarks...
