it wasnt just the 80 yard catch that made me start the thread. have you been watchin the panthers at all this year or am i the only person who thinks steve smith is the most valuable player on the team. *he's a kick ass punt/kick returner *never drops a ball *has 7 touchdowns in only 4 and a half games *and unlike moss and TO, he's good for his team cuz he's not a total egomaniac *plus he's a good actor (new Bojangles commercial) 10/16/2005 2:07:18 PM |

Would you really take Favre over Manning? Ok let me make a different comparison...McNair or Manning? Cause McNair has been to a Superbowl...but the point I was making is he is past his prime...I mean would you want Steve Smith or Jerry Rice RIGHT NOW in 2005?
Smith has done it with no other receivers making significant plays...Proehl is the 2nd leading receiver...KC and RG havent done much
Plus the Panthers cant get their running game going...and Smith doesnt just catch deep outs at the 3 and run them in...he'll catch a screen pass, break a tackle and outrun 10 defenders and take it 70 yards to the house...thats ALL on Smith 10/28/2005 9:50:00 PM |

This season? Yes. Favre is carrying a broken team on his back and still practically winning games.
Manning is doing just enough to win.
Quote : | "but the point I was making is he is past his prime..." |
Yeah, Favre is totally past his prime. Favre is totally comparable to McNair who couldn't stay healthy if he made a pact with the devil. Favre is way too old to be playing in the NFL
You are inept.
Quote : | "...fanboy talk about making BIG plays..." |
With all these big plays he makes, he's certainly in the Top 5 in Average Yards Per Catch, right?
No.
Top 10?
No.
Top 15?
No.
Surely, with all these "70 yard to the house"-type possessions he makes, he has to be in the Top 20.
OH WAIT, NOPE.
He's 26th.
Yeah, he's totallythe best receiver in the NFL.

Yes, they're coming very close to winning.
You may be familiar with it, it's an affliction the Panthers suffered from last season.
Fun statistic:
On the season, when looking at points allowed against points given up, Green Bay is +26, Carolina is +12.

and yes, at this point of last season, the packers were just as bad as the 2004 Panthers
i am very realistic about the panthers this season, i hope we can figure out a way to fix the running game, and get the other recievers involved. if this can happen, i think we are a lock for the playoffs 10/29/2005 12:34:54 AM |

If you're attempting to tell me that Peyton Manning is having such a significantly better year as a quarterback than Brett Favre to the point where picking Favre over Manning would be a huge mistake, then I think you're pointing the retard stick in the wrong direction, ace.10/29/2005 12:51:32 AM |

Manning is having an awesome season...
defenses are dropping 6-7 guys into coverage every play so he's just handing the ball off to Edge 25 times a game...
then when 3rd downs come up he's picking them up every freaking time...
The Colts look better than ever this year
Quote : | "does anyone remember him at utah" |
he only played one season at Utah I believe. He was on the same Juco team as Chad Johnson and another NFL receiver whose name eludes me right now.

Of course he's a big reason. I'm not saying he's a bad quarterback. But as a quarterback is he having a remarkably better season than Favre? No, especially considering Manning has a little thing known as a "running game" to help him out ,along with elite receivers. Favre loses and gains a new receiver a week, while the Green Bay running attack consists of a guy who has 14 carries for 30 yards this season.
So if I had to pick which the better quarterback is, I'm going to lean on the guy who is making something with nothing, rather than the guy who is on the best team in the league with more offensive weapons than you can count.
And if that's fanboyism, then oh well. It's still a much better argument than this "Steve Smith: Best WR" argument.10/29/2005 11:03:11 AM |
steviewonder All American 6194 Posts user info edit post |
then how can you say steve smith is not an elite wr in the nfl? he is basically the ONLY offensive threat right now for the panthers, and he still manages to pull out big plays, lots of yards, and a bunch of TDs while facing double coverage and defenses geared to stop him(not to mention overcoming delhomme's off target passes). You may argue that since he is the only target that we utilize his stats are inflated, but any lesser WR wouldnt be able to do what he has done. In my opinion he should be mentioned along with the top 5 WRs in the NFL right now not only because of his athletic ability, but also because of how he is carrying the team. 10/29/2005 11:15:18 AM |

Ferguson got injured last week cause Favre threw the ball 3 feet too high and hung him out to dry.
Favre isn't on Manning's level right now.
If Manning wanted to air it out on every play he could... he just knows thats not the way to win the most ball games.
The Colts finally figured out they need homefield advantage, cause they cant hang 400 passing yards on the best team in the AFC on the road in January...
Yes, Favre doesn't have many options right now other than gunslinging, but he still isnt among the top 5 QB's in the game right now. Palmer and Eli Manning have even eclipsed him... Favre has been abysmal in the playoffs for too long now to consider him an elite QB anymore.
He's still got some magic left, but he's also error prone. 10/29/2005 11:18:38 AM |
