Well hell, if the Romans thought the gods were with them then I guess we'll say Jesus is with us.
Jesus, however, may have different feelings on the matter.
Maybe something about wearing two types of cloth or something. 10/17/2005 10:19:07 AM |

my initial thought is "i don't like his style"
i also think the composition is weak
the smoke technique is the strongest part of the painting imo
lastly...it's gonna work though b/c it's gonna cause controversy
so personally, i don't like it enough from a technical standpoint to even appreciate the subject matter 10/17/2005 10:52:33 AM |

The guy has a style that doesnt suit the subject matter at all, and a very weak sense of composition, and of balancing light/dark and colors across an entire piece. 10/17/2005 1:15:16 PM |

What a waste of a thread... the least you could do is go out and find another bumper sticker that you feel is declaring a threat on your life. 10/17/2005 2:06:04 PM |

Isn't it illegal to wear an American flag like that?
And why is Jesus just standing there, instead of helping them firemen out? He's a carpenter, for chrissakes... 10/17/2005 2:11:17 PM |

Carpenters don't work with steel and concrete. durr
Besides, the last time civil servants wearing funky helmets came around Jesus they nailed him to a cross. 10/17/2005 3:00:33 PM |

Maybe Jesus wearing the flag that way is analogous to him allowing 9/11 to happen. 10/17/2005 3:13:13 PM |

Like whoever else said, all it's got going for it is the controversy it will generate.
In fact, I get the impression that the whole point is for it to be controversial. 10/18/2005 1:12:42 AM |

I don't see him trying to be controversial with the painting. I would think he was just trying to say that Jesus is there to comfort Americans facing the horrible tragedy of 9/11. Its just a bad painting through and through, get over it. 10/18/2005 1:48:40 AM |

at first glance, it reminded me of goya's Los Fusilamientos del 3 de Mayo:
with the white shirt, arm raised, men in uniform.
then the hazy sky, reds and blues, and triangular composition (with the two men kneeling on either side of jesus) reminded me of any number of Ascension of the Virgin paintings:
the meaning of this particular painting is kind of hard for me to discern, though. 10/18/2005 2:17:47 AM |

It's stupid... or just unoriginal. Jesus is there for guidance and support for those who are downtrodden or have been wronged? Wow, that puts a whole new spin on things.
And then there's always this: http://www.commondreams.org/views02/1110-04.htm 10/20/2005 10:44:12 PM |
