Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my desktop...

Sometimes when I hit the X on the window to close it...it will close but it won't disappear of of the screen...the only way I can get it off is taking an active window and "erase" it from the desktop...but doing this also erases my icons and all that stuff....does anyone know what's wrong?

sounds like u dont have enough RAM freed up. do u know how much u have in the computer? also, how many programs and processes are running?

What's RAM?

I don't think it's spyware because I called HP and they sent me spyware remover and detector and I have that installed...and I will scan about once a week and delete all the spyware....

Most the time when this happens I just have Internet Explorer, AIM, and Yahoo running...so I don't think there are too many programs running.

Well, you have two options that don't cost money but do cost time

1. run a antivirus check.. if you have one. if you don't, that's your problem

2. reformat the drive and reinstall

sawahash, it could be any number of things at this point. Do a search in Tech Talk for the "I've got a problem" thread, which has a good set of detailed instructions for checking for spyware, etc. etc. Post your HijackThis log here once you get it.

yeah my RAM is 512MB...I think it might be spyware...but I don't understand how it can still be messing up if I keep scanning it and everything

512 is plenty for the casual user. if u are continuously scanning and removing there is somethin wrong with certain internet sites u r visiting or certain things u r clickin on from friends or in emails. ur best bet is to download and run: spybot, adaware, microsoft anti-spyware, anti-virus. all of it should be done in safe mode btw. once all that is done, depending on how the system feels when runnin, download hijackthis and see what is in the log file. i would cleanup the system as well. clean out internet files, temp internet files, cookies, etc.

also do a defrag when all said and done to help speed up ur comp a bit.

u have to figure out what ur vid card is in order to get the proper updated drivers.

in the future, to get into safe mode restart the comp and start hitting the F8 key continuously. then it'll come to a screen and u'll choose how to start up. just choose safe mode and go from there.

If you cannot figure out the model/manufacturer of your video card, just burn all your data on a CD/DVD-ROM, and then perform a clean install of Windows.

i had this problem awhile back, when i had windows 98 (now i have XP and i haven't done it so i'm not sure if it works the same or not)

the guy in IT that i called with Gateway told me that i had too many processes running...i went to the Run Command from the Progams menu, and typed in MSCONFIG (all in lowercase), hit Enter, and then clicked the "Startup" tab at the top of the window that popped up. that then showed me all the programs that began running whenever i booted up my system, essentially all the programs that ran on "startup". it was ALOT. alot of shit that i didn't know about, stupid stuff too. so if you have something other than XP (again i'm not sure if it'll work the same for XP), try this and see if you don't have like 100 "processes" running. that would definitely be slowing down your system.

Another optoin is to ask somebody on TWW to stop by and fix your computer. If you are local to Raleigh and relatively close to campus (15 min drive), most will do it for $20/hr or a case of beer/hr. A shop will charge $30/hr+ and you won't have access to your computer for who knows how long. Probably a bunch of little things that can/should be done in addition whatever the base problem is.

(Always have at least three friends: one who can fix computers, one who can fix cars, and one who can fix house-related issues)

Push ctrl+alt+delete and click the processes tab and see how many processes are open. Sort the open processes by user name. "SYSTEM" should have the majority of open processes. Any of the programs under your user name (It might say "Owner" instead of your user name) that you don't recognize you can close. There may be a background program running that is taking up your RAM.


Oh and did you download/install the latest drivers for your video card?

^^Yeah I think I did download the latest version of my video card...on my desktop I right clicked...when to settings...did something else...not sure...but then I found the make of my driver and I went to the website and downloaded something that was released in the end of september...I think...haha sorry I used to think I was good with computer...but now this is making me feel so helpless...hahaha
