My roommate locked his keys in his '93 s-10... doesn't have the extra set here in Raleigh. We tried prying the door away and fishing around with a coat hanger to flip the lock, but no luck. Also tried to pull the spring-latch with the hanger to open the back glass. Also tried a butter knife to open the back glass, but there's no room to get in between everything to do this.
Any other ideas, or tips for using the coathanger - besides calling a locksmith or busting out glass. He'll have a set of keys brought back this weekend, but that's still a day away. 10/20/2005 5:41:17 PM |

Try a couple of other (chevy) keys? They wear down over time.
I've seen this work with newer cars as well (minivans) there are only so many possibilities and over time another key might be close enough.

My daddy said to get somebody's keys to see if they will unlock it, but most of the people around here that I know with Chevys or GMs have newer models, with newer keys. Oh well... Still an idea though. 10/20/2005 5:58:45 PM |

Laugh all you want, it happens though.
When I was working at a grocery store and those keyless remotes forst came out, quite a few people would park in front of the store and leave the van running. They would lock the door thinking the remote would unlock it. I saw twice where someone would ask every person that came out if they drove model X of some car. Both times someone else's key opened their door. As far as driving off, that would be a different story.
Locks do wear out over time as well. 10/20/2005 8:10:16 PM |

its a little tricky, but it can be done with a coat hanger, its tough if you have never had the door panel off and seen one though, you cant do it easily from the rear latch, the trick is to put a 90 degree bend in the end of the hanger about 1/4" long, then use a door stop or something similar to separate and hold the door skin away from the glass. slide it towards the handle on the inside and rest it on top of the window arm, with your free hand, fell the outside handle, when it starts to move, you are at the right spot, pull back slightly, then lift the end of the hanger up about 3/4" and push towards the inside of the truck, then pull towards the rear and you are in.
also, the back glass isnt hard, bend the coathanger in a z shape, slide in in between straight up and down, twist, slide down and pop the latch, chevys can be aggrevating, but not impossible. dodge's have the easiest back windows to break into ever, you can do it with a pocket knife in 10 seconds.

A friend of mine had campus police open his Ford Ranger one time, took all of 45 seconds for the officer to pop the lock on that one. Unfortunately, the truck isn't on campus. I think he's given up interest in breaking in and is just gonna wait for keys. No classes tomorrow for him anyway. Thanks everybody. 10/20/2005 11:54:42 PM |

Manual locks, black plastic spring latch on back glass. I think pulling the glass latch via the driver is the best bet. 10/21/2005 1:22:24 AM |
