by James Frey. this is the best book ever. it's a true story about his experiences in a drug treatment facility. it's very graphic and vulgar and raw. i promise that it is the best book ever.

American Psycho was also very graphic and raw, and I freakin' hated that book.

well, it's not american psycho.

it's extremely emotional. you get a very detailed picture of what it's like to be addicted to something and what it takes to stop using it. james hates AA and the 12 step program so you get to see how he stayed sober w/o believing in god or a higher power. the writing style is very different and i think it makes the experience more real for the reader. you really feel as if you've stepped into his shoes.

based on this, i will NEVER read a million little pieces.
books that let you "step into the shoes" of druggies, people with severe mental illnesses, and other psychological issues tend to be
- unorganized as hell
- a little too real, with regards to their hell
- irritating
when theyre written by the person who lived it.

when books like that are co-authored, i find them to be marginally better. and by co-authored, i DONT mean written by two alters
i can only imagine how fucking chaotic and painstaking books like this must be for people with no mental illnesses.

I"m not going to read it just because Oprah commented on it. If a book isn't about horror or adventure, I'm not interested. If drugs somehow tie into the story, fine, but I doubt a book recommended by Oprah is going to have vampires/demons/etc. in it.

BTW, Woodfoot I too work in an office full of women so I know what it's like. Conversations alternate between babies, pregnant women about to have babies, Clay Aiken, soap operas, gossip, Oprah, repeat.

while its not a "horror" book in the traditional sense, I was definately cringing at some points (having root canal surgery with no drugs, ripping hair plugs out, gang rapes, etc)

..its far from a "woe is me book"...in fact the author hates when peopel show him sympathy.

im not trying to convince you to read it, im just saying that your assumptions arent correct.

I read "Children of the Night" and thought that was a pretty good book. It actually tried to explain how vampires might be able to exist and why they need to feast of blood.

Why are you going to limit your experiences simply because it's endorsed by someone you don't like? You're not reading it because Oprah likes it, you're reading it because you want to. It's one thing to recommend something, and another to assert that everyone should read it simply because you did so and happened to enjoy it.
