I saw it a few months ago. It is definitely an in-depth movie and the plot jumps back and forth. If you are ready for a movie that can be hard to follow at times, but with a great twist, then definitely rent it. Also, you might have to turn the brightness up on your TV because the movie is very dark nearly the whole time.

I liked it. If nothing else, it is worth renting just to see what an anorexic Batman would look like.

Good, but very predictable. I'd make a commentary about the film but that'd just give too much away.

on fresh air toady he said he was down to 121 lbs. he said his normal body weight is 185-190. and he had to screen test for Batman six weeks after completing this movie. pretty crazy.

wtf? i fail to see any resemblence whatsoever...... maybe "Insomnia" but not Fight Club.

let's face it - if you don't sleep for a freggin' year, you're probablly gonna halucinate a few times.
i liked the movie - I'm just happy I know Christian is healthy now. i have no clue why he thought this movie was worth all this effort from him - his acting suffices.

Fail to see ANY resemblence? Are you that fucking dumb. Both characters are haunted by an imaginary figure who directly or indirectly makes them do some terrible things. The Machinist is a poor ripoff of Fight Club, its pretty ovious. The only thing it really has in common with Insomnia is that they don't sleep.

fight club is a comedy, the machinist is far far from it.
using a similar plot device does not make one a 'rip-off' of the other

^ agreed. while watching it i didnt feel like it was a rip-off or anything. it isnt like fight club was the first to do that (im sure, i cant site anything).

Definitely a must see if you like your movies dark and twisty. The storyline was a bit lacking, but Bale more than made up for that with his outstanding performance. IMHO

it isnt a comedy in the jim carey screwball sense, but it is very much a black comedy

[Edited on October 29, 2005 at 3:44 PM. Reason : but it isnt a black comedy in the 'martin lawrence in a wacky situation' sense]

meh, it's worth seeing just to see how dedicated a guy can be to lose so much weight.

as far as it relating to fight club...i disagree... but it's just liek every other psychological thriller/drama in the past few years that has an imaginary character

it's not a great twist at all. it's predictable.

agreed. it is in no way even close to fight club. the fight club "twist" isnt even the twist in the movie. its just one small part.

Since you have been talking about Fight Club + this movie+ twist, i'm pretty sure I can guess what the twist is already. You just ruined the movie for me

I've been considering renting this too, but I recently rented The Jacket, and the box descriptions sounded too similar.

it's not BOO scary - it's mentally & psychologically sort of scary i guess - if you put yourself into the character & imagine it's you atleast

there's not really a "twist" per se - this dude doesn't sleep for over a year supposedly - so it's obvious the kind of events which will happen to him but since the audience learns about the story as if they are living the life of this guy, yes - there will be a few twists & turns.
