Trying to fix up the g/f's system up a bit so she doesn't have to buy a new one. Just ordered some memory for cheap and was wondering if anybody has had any experience with refilling laptop batteries. Looking at http://www.batteryrefill.com/ specifically, and they are quoting a price about 1/2 of what a new replacement would cost. She does a lot of lab work, and an AC outlet isn't always available at the most convinient of places.

re-celling is ghetto
and not to mention that you don't wanna mess with the batteries.
What if they explode while you're keeping the laptop on your lap. 10/29/2005 1:37:29 PM |

If the current batteries suck, get new ones. When it come to powering your computer, either laptop or desktop, don't cheap out on the one part that can break all the rest. 10/29/2005 1:57:31 PM |

Refilling laptop batteries has to be about the most stupid idea I have ever heard.
It seems like at least one OEM has to issue a recall every year for brand new batteries that catch fire or explode. I can't imagine how this can be all that safe.
"I have burns all over my lap from battery acid but I saved money!!"
wtf.

No. There are companies claiming that they can refill your old notebook battery. What they do is breaking up your battery pack and replacing the old cells with some unchecked and unbalanced cells. The circuit board of your old pack is then recycled and reused (If the board is still working after all the abusive actions when opening the pack). What is wrong? On the circuit board of a smart laptop battery is a fuel gauge circuit, which communicates with you notebook computer to tell it when to start or stop charging the battery and how much power is left in you battery pack. Since the circuit is designed and calibrated with your old cells, it does not work properly with the new (refilled) cells. It does not only reduce the operational life of the refilled cells but also create fire hazard caused by the improper charge and discharge control. There is one more hazard for Li-Ion batteries. A protection circuit is needed for each cell inside the pack which provides over charge and discharge protection. If the new refilled cells do not match with the circuit, explosion will be happened if there is malfunction on either the laptop or the fuel gauge circuit." |

^ Thanks, was looking for some technical insight as to why it was good/bad. Battery exploding or catching fire on my g/f's lap is bad ... no sex for awhile
$100 is too much for a new battery, just have to wait for a new laptop. 10/29/2005 9:45:12 PM |

I wouldn't do it. Refilling ink isn't toxic and dangerous as batteries are. Too much of a change of something going wrong. Laptop batteries are one thing you should just buy new and avoid the problems.
Also try to see if a Lithium Ion is available. Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) doesn't last half as long and takes a lot longer to charge. It costs a bit more but lasts longer and lots of other reasons.
What laptop is it (model and manufacturer). 10/29/2005 10:19:48 PM |

^ Who says I can't? Please contribute something useful to the thread ... don't be like gargs.
^^ KDS Valiant 6380iPTD, presuming she had a NiMH to start with ... dunno exactly cuz she took it out. 10/29/2005 10:46:03 PM |

I'm not really understanding the logic here.
She has to buy a new laptop if the battery isn't replaced.

so basically.... better off probably just buying a new laptop than buying all these little upgrades.

^^^ Still works with the AC adapter.
^ $50 in memory wasn't too bad. Another $50 on the battery would have been nice. Ideally, the laptop will still find use with another family member after she gets a new one (whenever that might be). 10/30/2005 1:47:16 PM |
