Monster HDMI cables are 125 dollars at best buy.

I can get some generic ass cable on ebay for 25.

Are these cables for 25 worthless? Obviously they're not as superior as the monster, but are they just flat out sucky?

Monster cables are worth it when your TV is $5,000+ and you're a videophile about quality. If you own something less than that it's just not worth it. Also come to AudioAdvice and get your cables. The people there actually know what the fuck they are talking about when you buy it. They can show you and tell you why it's better and if you need it at all.

Eh, no

HDMI is a digital signal, but it still doesnt mean you can use a rusty nail. Well unless that rusty nail is impedance matched.

I wouldnt tell someone a decent impedance matched analog cable (like your normal y pb pr component) is a waste of money but a digital cable made by any reputable company for a run of oh say 10 feet will be fine. If you're going to spend 125$ on a cable , i would love to see what you are hooking it up to. If its a cheap scale up dvd player, or a time warner sci atlantac box, god fucking help you.

I am currently using a HDMI to DVI convertor and a OEM Samsung monitor DVI cable to run my DVD player and it looks excellent on the HDTV. I would have to say that digital signals are gonna be the same no matter what cable you use, unless it is shitty enough to allow bits to flip.

I have a 50 inch plasma tv and hdmi dvd player. you can really tell the difference in an upconverting dvd player from a regular dvd player when using the HDMI cable. I have mine hooked up by both HDMI and Composite, just to see the difference. HDMI makes a big difference

I bought a 15' hdmi -> dvi cable for $7.95 with gold tips, heavily shielded. works flawlessly on my monitor. Forget even $40 for a cable.

Don't waste money on 1080i unless you are going to waste money on 1080i. Excluding the cables. If it ever crosses your mind to buy a 125$ cable, then save the money to abort your first concieved. Repeat for every instance wherein buying a 125$ cable occurs to you, for every other successful conception. 1-to-1 until you're about out of excuses to buy 125$ cables, and then save that last 125$ to buy a .22 rifle to finish the rest of them.

mostly depends on your TV and how much the upconverting DVD player cost. Results vary a lot with this kind of thing.

Unless you bought shit componenents, any damaging surges are going to originate from outside your theatre setup... I've never heard of someone's receiver frying their tv. I've heard of lightning frying everything through the one unprotected component, but that again is what a 20-60 dollar surge protector is for.

again, agreeing with most of the people who know what they're talking about. paying 120 bucks for cables, surge protectors, or masturbation toys is just silly. now, it's LESS silly getting a really good surge protector and power filter, but paying retail and getting it at best buy is still just as dumb as paying 120 bucks for an optical cable.
