For the first time in a couple of years, the rifle team will be competing in a rifle match on campus. It's the third of 6 conference matches in which the score goes towards our season average for the conference championship. Firing starts at 8am in the basement of Reynolds Coliseum, and will go probubly to at least noon, if not later. Come on by and see what we're all about.

This is a side of shooting 99% of you on campus have never seen or heard of before. There's no cost to watch, just stop by for a few minutes to see something new.

Oop, my bad, the match is Sat morning. Sadly, for this part of the match, cheering isn't allowed. However, hopefully in a later match, we will do a Finals. This is where you take the top 8-12 shooters in the match and put them on the line together. They then shoot 10 more shots one at a time. After each shot, the scores are called out so they all know where they stand shot by shot. That's the more fan friendly part of the sport. Think of it as getting the top free throw shooters, lining them up on separate baskets, and seeing who get's the most in out of 10. I don't care how many of them start out over 90%, very few would get 9/10. If you've got anymore question, lemme have em. Hope to see you there.

For this match, we're shooting .177 caliber air rifles. Now the first thing that pops into most of your mind's is "BB guns?". Well, not quite. Three of us on the team shoot Anschutz 2002s:

, one an Anschutz 9003:

and the rest Feinwerkbaus, though I'm not sure of all their model numbers. The 2002s retail at about $1500 right now, and the 9003s $2500. New, these rifles went for $2500 and over $3000, respectfully. However we're only shooting air rifle at this match.

Our smallbore rifles are .22 caliber. 6/7 of us use older Anschutz rifles, and one has a newer Feinwerkbau:

Here's the newest of the Anschutzs on the team:

My rifle is actually about 8 years older than I am for the most part. I've added some newer pieces since then of course. Smallbore rifle retail from anywhere between $1500 to over $5000.

I'll put some pictures on my account here of what I can find of our rifles.

Not sure hat to tell you, NCSUrifle@ncsu.edu. We are a little busy trying to get settled in our new range, but I don't think that should have been a problem before now. You prob won't get an answer this week since we're preparing for the match this weekend. You might be able to corner one of us at the match this weekend to ask some questions.

As for where the range is, there's a good bit of construction goin on down there and we're kinda hidden in the corner. The range is in the north west corner of the basement. Roughly under the ticket booth closest to the bookstore. If you go in Reynolds, there are white metal doors in four places on the first floor. Three go to the basement, one to some storage room that's not ours, that's the door to the south west. I'll prob put up signs on Sat directing you were to go.

Just got an email about how things will run this weekend. The first relay will start shooting at 830, the other two at 1045, 100, and possibly one more if we need it at 315. There will be two NC State shooters on the first 3 relays. Noel and Jenna will be shooting on relay 3, Matt, Jen, Tom, and I on the first two. Other schools def coming are The Citadel, North Georgia, Wofford, and Clemson. Def no shows are Birmingham Southern (reining conference champs, they're scared) and Augusta State. Possibles include Georgia Military College and Mercer. There will be 12 people per relay. We fire 60 shots standing in 20 shot blocks, each with a time limit of 40min. Most of you prob think of that as a massive amount of time, I do too, I take only 13-20min of that, as does my teammate Matt. But there's one girl from Clemson that regularly takes 35-all of it. We're also shooting on rather small targets, the ten ring is a little bigger than the size of the period at the end of this sentence, put 10m away. So it's all relative.

FYI, the rifle team has been discussed numerous times on this board and I think most of the members who have been around for at least a year or so know what it entails. It's also an Olympic event, so if anyone keeps up with the Olympics at all they've probably heard about it or seen it.

We had a little construction session last night to get the range ready for this weekend and are almost done. The range is still a little messy, but what can I say. Hope to see you all there Sat.

I think it would be interesting to have a match where the people behind you would try to distract you, but that's unfortunatly not how it works. In this style of shooting, you can wierd yourself out so easily that at times there might as well be people hitting you in the back of the head with pebbles. So sorry again, if you do come to watch, I ask that you be quite while doing so. There will be other people there watching that will be able to answer your questions if you have them.

Thanks, good to know.

Anyways, we've figured out who will be shooting on what relays this weekend:

845: 4 Citadel, 4 North Georgia, 2 Wofford, 2 NC State(co-captains Jen and Matt)
1045: 4 Citadel, 3 North Georgia, 2 Wofford, 1 Clemson, 2 NC State(Tom and me)
100: 2 Citadel, 2 North Georgia, 2 Wofford, 1 Clemson, 2 NC State(Noel and Jenna)

Come see your favorite Wolfpack shooters teach a bunch of other school how to shoot. Hope to see you there.
