The Southern Baptist Convention refused to hand out water donated by Anheuser-Busch to hurricane victims. couldn't find any threads on it.
http://www.nbc-2.com/articles/readarticle.asp?articleid=4747&z=3&p=

Quote :
"CLEWISTON — Hurricane victims who wanted water had some difficulty finding it at a relief station in Clewiston Friday. The volunteer group running a supply center doesn't like the company that donated the water, so they decided not to give it to those in line for help.

Twenty-two pallets of the canned water, distributed free by beer company Anheuser-Busch, bears the company's label – and members of the Southern Baptist Convention refused to hand it out to those in need.

Resident lined up for miles to receive food and water at the distribution point. But the water was left on the sidelines by the Alabama-based group.

"The pastor didn't want to hand out the Budweiser cans to people and that's his prerogative and I back him 100-percent," said SBC volunteer John Cook.

The SBC felt it was inappropriate to give the donation out, and they weren't happy when NBC2 wanted to know why.

"Why do you want to make that the issue? That's not the issue. The issue is that we're here trying to help people," Cook said.

No one disagrees with that, but the Red Cross says Anheuser-Busch is also trying to help.

The water has been available all along, but the SBC volunteers set it aside and few people knew it was available.

While the SBC is standing its ground, the Red Cross says water is water and they're now handing out the supplies.

The vice-president of operations for Anheuser-Busch, Mike Harding, released a statement on the donation Friday reading:

“As we have seen numerous times in recent years, safe drinking water is a critical need following natural disasters such as Hurricane Wilma. At the request of various relief agencies, Anheuser-Busch and its wholesalers have donated more than 9 million cans of drinking water since Hurricane Katrina hit in August, and when called on, we’ll continue to provide water to all victims of Wilma as long as it’s needed.”

"I don't think it makes a difference who gives it out. It's going to a good cause. It's going to help everyone," said storm victim Lisa Simmons.

And many victims are grateful Anheuser-Busch is stepping in to help.

UPDATE: Late Friday, as NBC2 was leaving Clewiston, we saw two members of the SBC handing out the canned water alongside the Red Cross."

what's more important, people's lives or people's beliefs?

id imagine they just put water in the cans because its a cheap way to get things done. if they had to change their process and get unprinted cans seems like that would add time and money.

giving water in beer cans isnt anything new

the big deal is that they are refusing to hand out water to people who need water from the hurricane. they're putting their ideals over people's wellbeing.

They chose not to give water to thirsty people because the cans/bottles had logos on them. That's morally abhorrent. But you sick fuck wouldn't know anything about morals.

The article doesnt say they pretended to be out of water or anything like that. So I assume they had plenty of water to go around and they just chose not to hand out that particular supply.

Then that would be just as stupid as being a Christian, which is pretty stupid but not as abhorrent as denying a thirsty person water because you're a mindless sheep.

Meaning your church is secular. Because a truly religious church wouldn't tell you to think about the issues yourself. Because the truth according to DJ JC is already in the Bible. But let's save it for another thread.

oh and btw:

I have no problem with the obvious marketing ploy, but that might have been there reason every bit as much any hang ups about alcohol, still sort of stupid.

I just dont like the way the article is obviously playing up the issue when it probably wasnt that big of a deal.

This picture makes them look even worse. They could have easily mentioned all their beer brands. I mean, they are giving shit for free. I'd rather have that than them not being able to donate anything for the fear of upsetting the shareholders (who maybe very compassionate on the personal level, but would not want the company they own to just give shit away).

I mean, can you seriously imagine that there was a single person who was thirsty enough to stand in line for a can of water going: "wow, the shit's good. gotta gets myself their beer, too." WTF? How come stupidity is somehow elevated to something acceptable once it's for religious reasons?

uh yes, I mean its a really good way to advertise

If youre thirsty and drink water from a can with ABs logo then youre going to really wish that it was a beer and secondly you might feel the need to give them business for their genoristy.

I dont have a problem with them doing that though.

The SBCs decision was pretty dumb. But the fact that SBC is a bunch of retards is hardly news.

So does it warrant the sensationalist piece of crap article and thread making them out to be some of horrible monsters? No.

Dude, we're talking about people who just had all their shit washed away in the ocean, and have nothing to drink. They aren't receptive to any advertizing. Don't equate them to yourself hanging around in Walmart bored out of your fucking mind.

And it's not like the news made headlines. I do't see why it should not have been reported at all. It's pretty curious. Hardly the most interesting news that day, but nobody claimed it was.

IMO it reflects worse on the news agency than the SBC

Maybe you guys need to examine yourself here. I am certainly not "religious" but I do understand the basis of many religions, with SBC being one of them. The SBC has a very strong moral stand against alcohol companies, which I am sure you know. They have a very rigid set of beliefs that they refuse to back down from, and I think that is honorable. Hypothetically, let's say that an abortion agency or a child pornography manufacturer or Osama Bin Laden decided to donate water with an image on the front of the container for everyone to see. I am sure that would rub some of you the wrong way. Regardless of what it is, I am sure there is some kind of image that would be truly offensive to any individual. It just so happens that for the SBC, this is one of those things that they have chosen to take a stand on and will not back down.

IMO, it's quite admirable. If you believe in something (or against something), you should maintain your beliefs at all times, not just when it's convenient or easy. If I recall correctly there is a story about Jesus being tempted in the wilderness by Satan but resisting the temptation, and I'm sure that example is a big part of why the SBC chooses not to back down.

Keep in mind too, that's it's not like these people were dying and they were sitting back watching. I'm sure if they were on their deathbed they'd probably just redistribute the water in a different container. I really don't know the situation well enough to make a really informed hypothesis. All I do know is that people shouldn't jump to immediately hate any religion just because they are taking a stand against something they believe very strongly in.

Person A: I think that <insert bullshit>.
Person B: Bullshit! How can you say that? That's obviously wrong. WTF?

Person A: I'm a Christian, and we Christians think that <insert bullshit>
Person B: Is this bullshit very rigid? It's not like you'd say this bullshit now and later will correct yourself. You'll keep repeating this bullshit over and over, right?
Person A: It's very rigid. We never back away from our bullshit.
Person B: Wow! That's admirable!

I can't believe this really happened.

It's sad.

Who gives a crap that they put there name on the cans.

Obviously they always have a surplus of cans and water at the Budweiser factory. Who wouldn't want to promote the fact that they were donating to a humanatarian relief effort if they were a large corporation.

Jesus was tempted by the devil to use his Godly powers to serve his mortal needs and desires (hunger, never ending admiration and worship, and safety)

the fact of the matter is you cannot compare God's being tempted by the devil to a group of southern baptists refusing to hand out cans of water with an A and an Eagle on them

I'd be willing to wager that the average person cannot spend an entire day without coming into contact with a product manufactured or distributed by a company that has less than admirable subsidiaries or ownership

do some research into how many big name companies make some money of the american addiction to porn, or just how many companies cigarette money has financed over the last 50 years

there is no justification for this act of false piety

keeping water out of the mouths of the thirsty simply because of a fucking logo

if there has been a more pharisaical action in this generation, i'd love to hear it

Its not bullshit to decline to give out the water donated by AB for religious beleifs. No body died or was harmed because of it. I'm assuming they had other water to give out. What is curious is all the christian haters that surface when ever you think you'll get a chance to show how "stupid and sheep like" they are. It seems you could have picked a better topic than this. You christian haters are grasping at straws with this one....and I may be mistaken, but I thought the US blew off the aid Cuba offered to hurricane victims...not based on religious beliefs, but political I suppose. Was that wrong? Come on christian haters, you can do better!!
