Does anyone else's cat drink with his paws? My cat always dips his paws in the water bowl and licks it off.

He's such a weirdo.

mine does it too.

then again, he'll also come when you call him, wag his tail, and lay on his stomach expecting to you rub it. I wouldnt be surprised if he barked.

^ my cat does all of that stuff...and i swear, when he's looking out the window at birds and squirrels, he makes this sound that is similar to a faint bark.
he has a bell on his collar, and when he wants to get in a room and the door is shut, he'll pull his paw to his neck and ring his bell to let you know he wants in. he's a real attention whore...like if i'm in bed watching tv and not playing with him, he'll go to the window and rattle the blinds until i turn my attention to him.

^ I think that is something to do with a sensory gland.

My cat is also fat and he definitely thinks he's a dog. He fetches and does all of the other things that have been listed here. Plus, he meows at the door and comes and gets us sometimes when someone is knocking. Cats are so weird :-)

Elijah, my cat, is 19 lbs. He's a porker. But he also has a large stature. I imagine a healthy weight for him would be ~15 lbs judging by how tall and long he is. He doesn't overeat or anythig like that and he runs around everywhere, so we're kinda confused as to where all of the extra weight comes from. But we just think of it as more of him to love.

Both of my cats dip their paw in the water bowl. After many sliding water bowl incidents (oftentimes ending in a water bowl that was flipped over), we bought a CatIt fountain...they like the waterfall so much that they don't bother dipping their paw in the reservoir

if you get a glass of milk (like a 1/2 size glass) and drink it until there is only a little puddle left, my cat will stick its paw in and lick it.

but after she gets tired of that, she just jams her head into the glass. i'm waiting for her head to get stuck some day.

my kitty drinks w/ his paws too. he also pushes/pulls doors open by using the door knob (although he can't turn it). i guess he sees me always opening the door w/ the knob, so why shouldn't he? he also does the barking thing at the birds and squirrels. oh, and he beeps. his meow is so high pitched and so short that it sounds like an electronic beep.
silly boy

my female cat chirps at the local wildlife (birds, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, etc.)...it's most likely the same as the "cat bark" that was previously mentioned, but we always called it chirping. my male cat couldn't give a damn about wildlife, he prefers killing bugs and then re-killing them.

^my male cat is similar in his meow, fairly high pitched, just not short...more like, "hehhhhhhhhhhhhhh" (say it in a high pitched voice) instead of "mrowwww"

my kitties chirp at the birds too, they'll sit at the window for hours watching the birds and talking to them. and Miss Cleo eats with her paws. she never eats directly out of the bowl, she puts her paw in and takes out a piece at a time, it's rather silly but Miss Peaches eats from the bowl and drinks from the bowl like a normal kitty. and BOTH of my cats are fat, and they lay around the apartment on their backs, with their paws in the air and their belly completely exposed. it's rather slutty actually....and Miss Cleo lays on the arm of the couch, straddling it with one leg on one side and one leg on the other. i've totally gotta get pictures of it one day

he had an awful infection as a kitten. his eyes were madded shut for weeks after i took him in. he suffered from anemia as well...so i had to give him an iron supplement. he's all better now though.

Only 1 of my 4 cats puts his paw in the water dish, and he gets half of the water on the floor, so we put a dish especially for him with a towel under it right next to the refrigerator.

And every time you go to get water out of the fridge, he runs over and meows because he likes when you put ice cubes in the dish. Then he just sits and stares at them for a while

most cats dip paws into the water.

my cat used to fetch when he was a kitten.

he sticks his paws under the door and rattles it to get attention (get in and out).

that reminds me, i need to get him a fountain.

15 is still pretty big and if he is at 19 then its like someone who should weigh 150lbs being 40 pounds overweight... thats obese. You are more than likely shortening the life of your pet so it might be more of him to love but it will be for less time and probably at a greater expense to you. You are probably overfeeding your pet, believe it or not (most people do). Don't just give him an endles supply because they will eat too much, especially if bored. I know my fiance feeds her cat something like less than 1/4 c of dry food twice a day. This cat gets LOTS of exercise and it still struggles to stay at the ideal weight. Also, consider a higher quality food.

yeah i know i feed my cat too much. it started when he was a kitten and the package said to let them eat as much as they wanted.

he gets about a dry cup a day, doesn't eat the whole cup.

i'm going to start reducing his intake to either a 1/2 or 3/4 cup a day and see how that works.

i know he'll freak out though.

Cat weight can vary depending on certain factors. Below is an excerpt from an article on cat weight (http://www.thecatsite.com/Cats/Cat_Health/Fat_Cats.html)

Quote :
"The Ideal Weight for a Cat

Having settled that a cat is better off not being overweight, we now must decide what is the ideal weight for our cat. This varies from one cat to another, depending mainly on two basic factors:

Breed - This is the fundamental parameter in assessing a cat's ideal weight. For the larger breeds, such as the Maine Coon, a large fully-grown male can weigh 18 pounds (8 kilos) without being the least overweight. A female of a smaller breed, the Singapura, may actually be overweight at a mere 7 pounds (3 kilos)! You can find the weight ranges for different cat breeds at PetsMart cat breeds directory. Cats that are not purebred should usually weigh between 8-12 pounds (3.5-5.5 kilos), depending on the cat's bone structure.

Sex - There is a noticeable difference in weight between males and females of the same breed. Males are usually 2-4 pounds heavier than females.

Assessing Your Cat's Weight

The best way to tell if your cat is overweight is by checking the cat. Move your hands along the sides of the body and gently try to feel the ribs. If the cat is within range of its ideal weight, you should be able to easily count the ribs. The ribs should be covered with a layer of fat, but not to an extent that would make it difficult to feel them."

Start by reducing his food by ~20% and moniter his weight weekly. Also, try switching him to R/D (Science Diet's reduction diet).

Overweight cats that loose too much weight abruptly get Fatty Liver Disease, which is an accumulation of fats in the liver tissue. If untreated this is a fatal condition and is very expensive to treat.

Elijah ges about 1/2 cup of dry food a day and that's it. He doesn't have an endless supply of food, nor has he ever in the two years that we have had him. We got him as a full-grown cat and he has neither gained nor lost any weight in the past 2 years (and we keep close tabs on him). Also, he is very tall and long, so 15 lbs. would easily be normal weight for him if not more. Furthermore, he runs all over the place constantly, especially up and down the stairs. He is a very active cat. And finally, our vet thinks that he is completely healthy. He's just a big dude with a good amount of belly and I love him

Our new kitten we got from Joie dips his paws in his water bowl. I'm not sure how, but he manages to dip all four paws and not get anything but his paws wet. The first day we had him, he came and jumped in my lap on the couch and his paws were wet...all 4 paws. At first I was like wtf is there something wet on the floor, then a few hours later I caught him doing the "water dance" in which he strategically turns around in a circle dipping his paws.

I feed him Science Diet Indoor. Shit is expensive $17.99 for 8.5 lbs, I couldn't imagine how much more the reduction diet costs.

I don't even think he's that overweight. I just see his belly swing when he walks and it's funny.

He's 2 years old and 11lbs. That doesn't seem bad. I had the vet check him out and the only thing worth mentioning is the slight tartar/plaque buildup that can be remedied with proper brushing.

most cats are overweight. face it they are lazy. but how can I get my boy to be more active? his gut hangs when he walks..hehehe. i feed 1/4 cup twice a day. he always meows at me like he is hungry & wants more. His favorite thing is getting into my foster dog's food when she doesn't finish it. Aww he is a cute lil piggy though!

Brushing your cat's teeth is a great way to prevent/slow down tarter accumulation, however, it will not remove what's already on the teeth. This can only be removed with sedation and ultrasonic cleaning.

I think r/d is about as much money as any other science diet food.

We feed our two cats Eknumba sp? Weight Control Indoor Formula and it has helped keep one of our cats at the proper weight and the other one has lost a little bit of weight. We also go them seperate bowls and that helped a little bit.

Foster a litter of kittens.
They will chase the hell out of your cat and it will lose weight.
...but I dont think it's worth the piss soaked clothes and tons of poop scooping you'll have to do.
You could just find one playfull kitten and adopt it too. Of course when it gets older you'll soon have two fat cats.

Cats aren't lazy. They're hunters who naturally spend most of the day sleeping and if you take away their prey then they have nothing to do for the 15% of the day that they're active.

My cat does the same thing.

The annoying part is she only comes to me when she needs something. She usually goes to my husband when she wants to cuddle.

She loves her belly to be rubbed and she comes when I whistle for her.

However she does not drink with her paws.

I bought a laser pointer... my cats love it!

I just pick it up (its one of those key chain ones) and they perk up and come towards me. I've gotten Peaches to run in a circle for minutes on end. My fat boy will only run a little bit, then lie down and wait till its near him.
