Wake Forest University turns over sexual assault investigation to city police

At the request of Wake Forest University and the Forsyth County district attorney's office, the Winston-Salem Police Department is investigating a report of a sexual assault on Wake Forest's Reynolda Campus.

The incident, reported to have occurred Oct. 21 in a Wake Forest residence hall between midnight and 7:30 a.m., involves a female Wake Forest undergraduate student and four male Wake Forest undergraduate students. Neither the university nor police investigators — Winston-Salem or Wake Forest — are identifying the female student or the male students.

The university police department and the district attorney's office asked Winston-Salem police on Oct. 25 to assume the primary investigative role in the case. The university police department, which had been investigating the case, will assist Winston-Salem police investigators as needed. "

This incident has been kept pretty quiet, but it reportedly involves 4 Wake Forest football players. Note the 4 football players that were suspended immediately after this incident was investigated. Also, police reportedly pulled these players out of class.

WINSTON-SALEM -- The status of four Wake Forest football players on indefinite suspension is "day-to-day,"] coach Jim Grobe said Tuesday.

The four -- wide receiver Kevin Marion, defensive tackle Jyles Tucker, special-teams player Travo Woods and offensive lineman Eric Gaskins -- have resumed practicing with the team, but no decision has been made on their status for Saturday's game at Georgia Tech (1:30, no TV).

The suspensions, for unspecified violations of team and athletics department policies, were announced last week before the Deacons played at Duke. It was Grobe's decision not to take them to Durham with the rest of the team.

"Now the issue is how quickly are these guys back on the field," Grobe said, "and I can't answer that right now. That's something that will be day-to-day and something I'll talk with (athletics director) Ron (Wellman) about, and I'm sure he'll be in touch with the university administration.

"We're going to try to do the right thing; basically, we're going to try to make decisions that are fair to the kids, that are right for our football team and for Wake Forest."

Grobe said the situation is more of a distraction to him than it is to his players and has put him in a dilemma.

"I want to support these kids, but I want the right result and I want things to come out the way they should," he said, "and I don't know what that is right now. I only hear one side. You hear a million things. ... I know that you've got to be careful that you don't make decisions too quickly. You've got to wait and see how things work out.""

Well, the story did finally get out.

I've heard about it second-hand (from a friend that knows some of the football players), but I don't really know too many of the details.
