I am taking 5 400-level business classes next semester and two PEs & I'm pretty worried about the workload of the business classes.
BUS462 BUS465 BUS466 BUS480 BUS483 PE109 PE269
Am I going to completely have NO time for anything else than school? has anyone else taken all four concentration courses and 480 at the same time?? 11/3/2005 10:01:57 PM |

Who are your teachers?? More specifically...who is your 480 teacher??
If it's Palin...you don't have a chance. 11/3/2005 10:57:32 PM |

Although I only graduated last May...Ive also forgotten what the numbers are. Is 462 Marketing Research?? is 465 Personal Selling?? I think I took both of those. Neither were too time consuming. Can't remember if I took 466 or not. I know I didn't take 483.
List the classes and teachers and I can give you a little more input. 11/3/2005 10:59:08 PM |

I had Kimbrough for 462 and she wasn't that hard. I doubt she teaches different, but her tests weren't that tough. It wasn't very time consuming. Henard's class isn't too bad either. Tests are all multiple choice...and then you have to sell the knives. But that's not too bad...just go home and sell to a bunch of family friends. I also thought the material for 462 was easy...but I don't know with your teacher.
I had Palin for 480...and if 483 with him is anything like 480 with him...then you're screwed. Don't get me wrong, you learn A LOT. But he teaches his classes like they are graduate classes (and he'll tell you that). First day of 480 we started off with 35 kids and ended up with 12 at the end of the week. He scared everyone away and rightfully so. The workload was ridiculous. I got a B+ in his class...but it took possible A's in other classes down to B's and B-'s because I just didn't have enough time to put into them.
And 480 with any teacher is going to be a little tough. It was just close to unbearable with Palin.
Hate to say...but you're screwed. You really won't have time for anything else. I really want to ask how this happened? Did you just switch into a Marketing Concentration?? I would recommend trying to find a Marketing Concentration class given during the summer. I got lucky and they offered a 495 the summer before my senior year. But this really is suicide. Sorry.

^You would know more than me...but how could you have not taken any of those before now??
I took 480 my junior year and I had a friend who had all her concentrations taken before she started her senior year. I guess with you cramming it all into three years that makes it different...but you couldn't take any of those last semester??
I would HIGHLY reccommend trying to spread this out over another semester or at least a summer session or two. I know 480 has been offered during the summer before and you MIGHT be able to find a concentration class during the summer too.
I also worked while I was taking all of these classes. So that might affect my perception. But I also didn't spend a lot of time studying. I still think I would have a hard time keeping up with all these classes even if I wasn't working. 11/3/2005 11:28:49 PM |

well most of them you can't take until you are a junior and I wasn't a junior according to my hours when i registered for this semester. (i wasnt a junior until i went to summer school all this summer)
and a lot of them had prereqs which I had to take first, which I am in now

Well good luck. I mean...I'm sure it can be done. If you're graduating in three years then you can obviously handle a decent workload and are pretty smart. But that is just going to be a miserable final semester for you. 11/3/2005 11:35:07 PM |

i'm in bus465 now with kimbrough, and as long as you go to class (and pay attention) and participate in the project, you should be fine. she's a very fair teacher with grading, and the workload is right on average. i think you biggest workload will be bus480 with palin... i basically echo what jbrick said, as i've heard the EXACT same thing.
Either way, I wish you luck, it's going to be tough doing them all in one semester, but it's managable if you don't procrastinate... hope it all goes well.

Can you find another concentration other than 483??
I somehow found some random concentration class that filled in for a Marketing and IT concentrations. I think it was like 440 or something (I could easily be wrong on that). But they had some guy come over from NC State's IT department to teach it (he wasn't even a real professor), and he missed like 7 or 8 classes because he was always on call and had to leave or not show up when one of the servers wen't down. He gave ridiculously easy tests that come from the homeworks.
I would try to find another concentration class other than the one with Palin. The man is just extremely demanding. 11/3/2005 11:45:57 PM |

any of these: BUS 440 DATABASE MANAGEMNT , BUS 441 BUSINESS DATA COMM ,BUS 463 RETAIL MANAGEMENT , BUS 464 INTERNATIONAL MKTG, BUS 467 ELECTRONIC MRKT , BUS 469 IMC PROJECT , BUS 473 SUPPLY CHAIN MGT
i just thought that class sounded interesting, but if the professor is that terrible, i would much rather take something with less work

He's not a terrible teacher. He just has a different method of teaching. I don't even know if I'd call it teaching...it's like learning through experience.
But given your situation...it's just too much. And I think the class I took was 440 or 441. I'm going to try and go back and check. Does it say "Staff" for the teacher for anyone of those?? If it does...then that's the class and teacher I had. Now that I think about it...Business Data Communications sounds REALLY familiar. I think that's it. I mean...the material was horrible. I don't know any of that IT stuff. But it was spoonfed to you. Extremely easy class. 11/3/2005 11:55:54 PM |

just a lil more info...earp teaches 441 now and she is nice but if you are lookin to learn somn bout marketing this class isnt it...in fact i have no idea why it is a concentration class for marketing cause i dont think ive even heard the word marketing in that class all semester...she really doesnt give you any kind of clue for what to expect on the tests and they arent multiple choice. if i had to do it over i wouldnt take this class again, but mainly cause with only 12 required marketing hrs missin out on 3 with a non marketing class kinda sucks

graduate in 3 years? At least when you get in the real world(faster) you will run back to college for the masters.... 11/4/2005 4:14:57 AM |

Let's talk.
And for the rest of you- you don't have to wait until the end to take your concentration courses. As long as you have the core course that is the pre-req/base course for the concentration, you can start mixing it up with other degree requirements. For example, once a student takes BUS 360, concentration courses can start the next semester. 320, finance conc. courses can start the next semester, 340, IT concentration courses, etc... Finish by blending concentration courses and other core courses in areas you are not concentrating.
I think the schedule is manageable, but it won't be easy. Doing an entire concentation in a semester is kind of brain overload. but at least it is marketing and not finance. When finance majors do this, all the formulas start blurring together
I think it is a great combination of topics for what you want to do, it will just be a fair amount of work. But, if you have been on the fast track already, you can probably handle it. Mostly, its like a baby learning to walk in a day rather than over a series of months by learning to sit up, crawl and pull up first. 11/4/2005 6:31:59 AM |

thanks for all the advice everyone... wolfee-I'm in 360 right now (this was the earliest I could get in), so I couldn't take any of my concentrations yet
I keep checking tracs to try to get into 480 with anyone but Young
I still haven't decided if I'm willing to drop BUS483 with Palin to take another concentration i'm less interested in....this class sounded pretty interesting to me, but the way everyone is talking about Palin scares me 11/6/2005 8:18:44 PM |

I think I would keep it. He's challenging, but you will learn ALOT and he is fair. He's just not wimpy, doesn't assign wimpy work, and knows what it takes to be an entrepreneur. Its not for the faint of heart. The class doesn't ask anything more of you than if you were starting your own business for real. It allows you to learn all the tasks and research needed before you open the door on the first day and it helps you understand the hard work that goes into it. The class gives you a map for thinking up a great idea, researching it, financing it, marketing and selling the products and more. I like it better than your other options because I know you will REALLY use anything that you learn in that class later on. 11/6/2005 10:14:30 PM |
