first off, i am a hunter and im not getting in to whether or not hunting is wrong
what do yall think about guided hunts, safari type deals?
to me, hunting (big game) should be one on one, you vs. the animal....the idea of hiring a massive party to find the animal for you, lead you to within 100 yards of it, and generally do 95% of the work is wrong
shouldnt it be more along the lines of, if you cant do it yourself, you dont need to be doing it?
yes i understand that the majority of the people that engage in this type of hunting are not from the native envrionment and their busy work schedules only allow them a few days in the "bush".....but how is it hunting for someone to pay thousands and thousands of dollars to fly to another country, pay for everything to be done for them, and all they do is pull the trigger?

if you want to relate this to fishing, I go with a big group to go gulf-stream fishing. Yes, they do find the spot to fish for us, but it is much cheaper going on a boat with 50 other people than going on one with 6, since I wouldn't own a boat that could go out there. I don't consider that wrong persay, because I feel like there are large amounts of fish in the spots they stop at, as opposed to the safaris you spoke of, which take a mass of hunters to few animals. 11/6/2005 12:31:30 PM |

i'd say that it's not as bad as baiting or running dogs.
and prob neccessary for most people who want to hunt in any "exotic" (read: not local) places.
and you could probably learn a lot from one of those dudes. 11/6/2005 1:13:48 PM |

oh no, im not doubting the skills and knowledge of any of the guides
my complaint is with the rich fucks that go over there, spend all the money for other people to do all the work and then act as though it was so difficult and like what they did was some great accomplishment 11/6/2005 1:25:04 PM |

There you go. After all, how did you first start hunting? Did you just grab a gun and go? Or did someone more experienced go with you, showing you where the 'good spots' are, how to track/find game, etc?11/6/2005 1:48:06 PM |

I agree that it's pretty lame, but then again so is most hunting. I think that when these guys show off their trophies, everyone realizes this.
It's fine so long as it's done in a lawful and responsible way. Hell, any legit money going into Africa is a good thing. 11/6/2005 2:12:24 PM |

as he just said, the only one who gives a shit about your hunting trophies are other hunters. so you think its lame and they probably dont. why does your opinion matter any more than theirs?
what if i think anyone who uses a gun instead of a bow and arrow is pussying out?
the point is...it doesnt matter at all and this really isnt a soap box issue. 11/6/2005 4:13:33 PM |

One on one? you vs. the animal? I assume we're talking barehanded cage match kinda shit - because walking through the woods, and hiding in trees with high powered guns really isn't one on one.11/7/2005 12:13:00 PM |

^^dude, hunting is a lot harder than you think.
making the shot is the easy part, and that's the way it should be. you don't want to fuck up the shot and maim an animal. if you do everything else right--or just get lucky--and you actually GET a shot at whatever you're hunting, you want it to be all but guaranteed instant death when you squeeze the trigger. 11/7/2005 12:26:10 PM |

What the hell ever.
My uncle does it drunk.
Hell. While backpacking, I often see deer. I'm also moderately capable with a gun.
If I were to combine these two enterprises, I'd have hunting.

Point? Packing out all the meat from a deer isn't what I'd call "easy," unless you "backpack" around Jordan Lake.

Hunters use ATVs for the more difficult aspects of hunting. You know, like "walking" and "carrying stuff."11/7/2005 6:57:45 PM |

You got me all wrong, he is an idiot for hunting while drunk. A huge idiot. Maybe a slug in his foot would cure him of that before something really bad happened.
I don't know about you, but most of the places I backpack aren't too ATV friendly. Just because it is called an All Terrain Vehicle doesn't really mean it can go anywhere. And I don't know if it is really possible to use an ATV for "walking," though one might work in place of it. Guess if you have enough $$ you could just airlift the shit out.

broke guys like me don't use expensive atv's, and even those that do don't just drive right up to where they hunt. they help, but they are not like hoverounds. also, anybody who would hunt drunk is risking their own lives and others too, not to mention making the huge number of responsible hunters look bad 11/7/2005 7:27:20 PM |

killing something with a gun does not mean you are hunting, nor does it make you a hunter

I occasionally watch hunting shows, and I don't see any appreciable difference between the above scenario and "real" hunting.
Is it that you must first walk a mile before you sit on your butt, waiting do shoot a very dumb animal with a high powered rifle? Is that significantly better than sitting on your back porch, waiting to shoot a very dumb animal with a high powered rifle?
I have no ethical problems with hunting, but let's not fool ourselves-- it's nothing more than recreation.
Like horseshoes, only participants feel like they're being manly.

the hawk's sight, speed, and flight makes him able to catch the rabbit. Man's mind makes him able to take other animals, and yes, hunting is mostly recreation. we have more efficient ways to kill animals for food.

One time, I covered myself with leaves on a deer trail after dousing myself in scent masking liquid. I laid in wait for four days until one finally came along...bowie knife to the gut.
Now THATS hunting
Of course it is recreation, unless you are a hermit who lives off the land or are lost out in the woods. And it is not about being manly, but enjoying what you are doing and being out in the woods blah blah blah etc....
Quote : | "Is that significantly better than sitting on your back porch, waiting to shoot a very dumb animal with a high powered rifle?" |
I don't know if "better" is the right word, but sure, imo
And let's not forget that there are types of hunting that you just cannot do from the back porch with a pint of Old Crow in your hand.
