Read this shit, "We had no clue," Elizabeth Madonna said. "Why would they build a house somewhere where it would wash into the ocean?"
"Nobody told me it was a stupid thing to do," Semmler said. "If it was so crummy, someone should have said something."
YOU BOUGHT A HOUSE NEXT THE OCEAN, EVERY TIME A HURRICANE COMES THROUGH, THE WEATHER CHANNEL MORONS STAND ON THE BEACH NEXT TO HOUSES FALLING DOWN. HOW CAN YOU BE SO IGNORANT???
I just have a problem with these people blaming their problems on the city/state. The islands move, its a risk you take, if you cant take the risk, dont buy the house. 11/7/2005 8:40:59 AM |

Yea really, if you can afford oceanfront property, you can afford to lose it.

People from out of state need to not buy up all our beach property. Good ridence. They have beach in NY. That shit is making it hard for North Carolinians to enjoy our beaches because everything has gotten so expensive.

it always amazed/amazes me when they come along and find this pristine, beautiful piece of beach somewhere and build a house on it. people have been living on the carolina coast for 250+ years and there had NEVER been a home built there. "hey we're so lucky no one ever thought of building a house here! look at this view! it's too good to be true!"
hey, dickhead. the people who live there aren't stupid. they didn't build houses there for the very reason you're finding out about now.
so quit whining, you asshole, and quit asking the government to help you rebuild it on the same spot.11/7/2005 9:26:12 AM |

As far as entitlement, I don't know about being entitled to the beach as a resident of NC, but I'm sure as hell happy that these out-of-state people with more money than brains lost their money by doing something extremely stupid with it.
It is not logical or morally fair, and I don't really care. It is straight up schadenfreude. 11/7/2005 10:02:34 AM |

yeah, you need to buy the property on the other side of the street. that way in 10 years it will be waterfront and you can sell it for 2 or 3 times as much.11/7/2005 10:58:44 AM |

Quote : | "The meeting got raucous. Town building inspector Gene Casey tried to explain why he condemned the houses. People questioned his credentials. Someone called him "the Gestapo." The next day, he was maligned on a local radio station.
"It was really awkward," Casey said recently, recalling the meeting. "I felt bad for them."
On a recent afternoon, Casey drove his pickup on the sand alongside the eight duplexes, pointing out their problems. None have working stairs. Their power and sewer lines are gone. Their driveways are washed away.
Since Ophelia hit, the waves have kept pounding the homes. A deck recently tumbled off one house. Inside, mold climbs the walls. There are cracks in the ceilings and floors.
"I want to help the homeowners get some help," Casey said. "Of course, some of them, I want to say, 'Did you look at the house before you bought it?' "
Casey and other town officials have tried to put the property owners in touch with officials at the state, in federal government and at utility companies.
Some property owners want to build temporary bulkheads to stave off the waves. But they can't, because North Carolina doesn't allow hardened structures on its coastline.
Peter Macrie, from Hammonton, N.J., is trying to organize other property owners. He's considering hiring a lawyer and suing the state.
"They didn't allow us to protect our property," he said. "If we get the wrong nor'easter, it's all over anyway." " |
haha, just like some damn northerners to expect shit to be done for them, all you have to do is do a little research into your "investment" and you would realize it was a bad decision. For all the shit yankees try to say about southerners being lazy and slow, it seems like its the other way around. and who the hell says "Gestapo" anyways, fucking yankees 11/7/2005 12:35:49 PM |

Topsail Island gets the worst during hurricane season. It's always getting split in half or eroded away or something. Buying a house ten feet from the water was a bad mistake.
But I can't blame this guy

If you're 200 yards from the water you'd think the house would be fine. 11/7/2005 1:06:29 PM |

Part of the whole problem is real estate agents are specifically targeting northerners for this type of property because they don't know any better, and NC law doesn't require them to disclose any of it. 11/7/2005 8:03:22 PM |

Probably not the best way to be angry here. In fact I bet that 98% of people would think that a home 200 yards from the water would be reasonably safe.

i kind of doubt the 200 yards claim
there used to be a long pointy spit at the north end, maybe it was 200 yards long 11/7/2005 11:27:37 PM |
