relatively common in german sheperds

not to overtake your thread, but

PossumDog, what did you go through with hip dysplasia and your dog? my brother's dog most likely has it, pretty badly actually, but they're waiting til he's at least 1 year old to do anything about it (he's 10 months right now). what procedure/treatments did you choose and how much $$ was it?

First time it was with my german shepherd, caught it too late and there was nothing we could do but put her on pain relievers, and put her down when it got too bad.

The second time was with a young bluetick coonhound of mine, when he was about 6 months old. I checked on him the next morning after a night in the field and he was limping around and screaming when he tried to walk. After an immediate trip to the vet and some x-rays, dysplasia was confirmed. There are two procedures that can be done, one if caught while the dog is still young and growing, and another which is done later on. I think the latter involves some type of replacement. We chose not to operate while he was young, put him on some type of glucosamine joint therapy for dogs, and he is doing pretty well now. If it gets bad again, we'll surely have the operation done, that dog is my mom's baby. I heard the prices but that was two years ago so I don't really remember anything except $$$$. I didn't mean to imply that I actually HAD either of the procedures done.

If any of that is incorrect, I apologize, I'm no veterinarian.

last quote i got on my pit-mix puppy is $1300+ if she definitely needs the surgery... they are still questioning it. If she needs it, we'll get it.
