MAYBE if you pull the spare tire out and fill the whole trunk, but i seriously doubt it.
miatas are not a good platform for any kind of serious audio. no room to put anything, convertible (so bass dissipates almost totally with the top down, and to a large degree with the top up, and the fuel tank occupies the front end of the trunk, so you can't port anything to the cabin.)

how about the area behind the seats...
I'm looking at a bandpass box... so the sub doesn't have to actually "fit" in an upright, forward-facing position... if there's like, 13-14" on two dimensions and the width of the area behind the seat, the sub can be rotated on two axes and I should be able to enclose enough air polyfill to at least be close to the tuning I'm looking for... I'm not necessarily looking for an easy way to do it, just a way it can possibly be done 11/8/2005 7:04:51 PM |

nowhere CLOSE to enough area behind the seats.
you can fit a CD changer or amplifier behind the seats, and that's about it. 11/8/2005 7:53:57 PM |

Duke and I went through his miata to try and find a good place for a sub. There is no room behind the seats. Your only bet is to take up all the trunk that is there and make it a box for the sub. 11/8/2005 8:32:43 PM |

Yea most two seaters or convertibles are shit for audio improvement. My trunk is very slim. My only saving grace is that I can fold the backseats down and have the area there that I could put a box if I wanted to. 11/8/2005 8:44:55 PM |

If you want to add a sub, go with a low profile 12. They are 3'' tall. Put that behind the driver seat, and the amp behind the passenger seat. 11/8/2005 8:45:20 PM |
theDuke866 All American 52839 Posts user info edit post |
^^^^and even then, look at how the trunk is made. i mean, i guess you could go with as much of the brute force approach as you can shoehorn in there, but between it being a convertible, and the trunk being sealed off completely from the cabin with no way to port it, it's not really a good setup.
check http://www.miata.net for what people have done. you'll see that it's a real pain in the ass.
you might could put a sub up on the package tray if it didn't kill all your rear visability. that wasn't an option in mine because of the double-braced roll bar.
^you think that even a low-profile 12 would fit behind the seat once you had the extra depth of mounting it and stuff? even the cd changer and small amp behind my seats limited their movement to the rear (which i didn't need, but even at 5'8", i had the seats almost as far back as they'd go.)

The brackets for the low-pro 12'' are on the sides of it. It truely takes up only 3'' of depth. I bet that would fit. 11/8/2005 9:44:26 PM |

I can fit a 15" in the trunk of a miata as long as your willing to loose the spare tire. I can do it with fiberglass and have to cut holes to port out behind the driver and passenger seat. Go to http://www.soundcreation.zoomshare.com to see some of the stuff that i have done Particulary 15" MTX RFL in a BMW and 2 10" JL W3's under the backseat of an '05 dodgeram 11/8/2005 10:02:06 PM |

^A lot of us can put a 15'' sub in his trunk. We are trying to save him time and money because it would be pointless.

^dunno, but as long as there is only metal to cut through and no gas tank im pretty sure i can accomplish it....
^^^^I am saying it is possible, I can do it(with still leaving trunk space by loosing the spare tire), and I can make it where it sounds decent to the driver and not to call you out but I dont think many people could do this unless they have had many years experience. And it is not pointless by the fact that it is original, how many miatas do u know that have a 15" in the trunk, not many due to the fact people would rather take the easy way out and compromise than putting what they actually want in the trunk.

research it before you do it...i seem to remember some issues with doing that, and i think part of it revolved around the gas tank being in the way.

ok, you're wanting a bandpass box so....i hate to do it, but i gotta ask....what type of sub is it??
Disadvantages of bandpass: really big (ande Really bad frequency response out of the woofer)
Disadvantages of miata: really small
big enclosure in small car dosen't usually work that well. You MAY be able to fit a ported box, probally a sealed.
good luck 11/9/2005 3:58:55 PM |

it's an Adire Audio Tempest mk. I
and, as I said before, the reason I was contemplating a bandpass box was to reduce the height and depth of the enclosure by mounting the driver at an angle, while taking full advantage of the volume available along the width of the car... this was not pulled out of my ass, I checked the specs for the driver I have (mounting depth and height), and the specifications of several pre-built and homemade Miata enclosures I could find on the Internet (generally, for much smaller drivers)... I'm going for more of a "SQ" install as it is in car audio parlance, so if I could get away with a sealed enclosure, I'd love to, but not in the trunk, I'll need my spare.
and, I'm sorry, but the only troll in the thread is you, State409c

You have no clue what you are trying to accomplish here. You don't know the application yet and as such you don't have the proper solution.
I am not trolling either. I could launch on about how you have this shit all wrong. But I figure maybe I can coax you into revealing more of your plan, and thus looking like a bigger idiot in the process, before I decide to take the time to school you here. You know, trying to extract maximum stupidity out of you.
I don't know if you can be more lost on this one.

and I probably could trade this sub for a nice 12 or 10 (or a pair of crappy ones), may even end up doing that, but the novelty of solving this problem kind of piques my interest as well... since the general consensus is that it can't be done other than in the trunk (something that I'm not really willing to explore-- I intend to stuff a carputer back there eventually, without sacrificing the spare), I'll have to, yes State409c, acquire the merchandise before I investigate further. Thanks for the responses, and I may end up ringing one of you custom fiberglass kids up if I can find some way to compromise somewhere such that I don't have to put this thing in the trunk.

Ha, you keep trying to dismiss me like I am trolling because you know if you try to address the problem you'll get raped in this thread.
Bottom line is (and plenty of others are going to back me up on this) is that a bandpass is hands down, bar none, no doubt about it
NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE CORRECT SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM
Bandpass has been dead for a legitimate low frequency reproduction system for decades.
You could accomplish in the same box space you are going to need for a single bandpass 15, multiple 8s or 2 10s with less complexity and the end result a better sounding box. You don't even understand the correct use of polyfill so how the fuck do you think you are going to get a box like this to work in a car environment. 11/10/2005 3:26:25 AM |

your completely incorrect thought process
about wanting to do a bandpass box in a miata (with a gigantic 15 at that)

How often do you really haul around a passenger? I decided it wasn't worth the effort with the MR2, but I considered cutting off the passenger foot space under the dash to fit a sub. They couldn't stretch their legs at that point, but very few people want to sit in the car that long as a passenger.
I would go with something small, you aren't going to need a whole lot when the sub is 8" from your body. I have a sealed 12 in another vehicle (old rockford DVC) and with a strong amp and its annoying turned up. The rear view mirror shakes and every body panel goes nuts. 11/10/2005 5:19:48 AM |

^ Didn't actually go through with it, but with the 12 I had laying around it seemed like the only place to go. Also thought about moving the passenger seat extra forward for a box behind it. 11/10/2005 6:37:10 AM |

Alright, well, you can still mount the sub at an angle for sealed or ported boxes.
Adire audio subs are awsome, btw.
Let's see, the Qts for that woofer is .34 or .42 (well, the mark I may be different), so it would work well in a ported box, but the box would have to be huge. You're better off to go with a sealed box, it would be much smaller, probally by a factor of 2.
Really, If I were you, i'd trade in the tempest for a Brahma or 10 or 12 or a Tumult 12 (probally have more volume output, but not get quite as low). Man, Brahmas and Tumult's are awsome, I'm def. gonna have an Adire sub once this MB Quart dies on me.
But yeah, go sealed. Or smaller woofer, and then still sealed. 11/10/2005 3:27:45 PM |
