McCain is hillarious. Just like Al Gore can be, incidentally, when he loosens his tie a little bit.
But McCain has a long history with the Daily Show for the very good reason that he's funny and affable. All the more reason he would be infinitely electable if he could ever get through the goddamned primaries. 11/9/2005 1:19:48 AM |

Then he makes a joke about libby, then says that cheney says he wants to take 'measures' not torture or some shit.
its funny to watch mccain. he so angry that bush's club has been oposing him at every turn, he was thinking how dumb it would be to go vent with jon stewat becuase he knew jon would get him to bash his party.

because McCain is too much of a moderate for republicans to vote for him. Republicans do well when they run on a conservative platform, not some happy medium.11/9/2005 8:59:38 PM |

What the fuck is so moderate about John McCain?
I mean, disliking Dick Cheney and George W. Bush doesn't make you a moderate. Neither does opposing torture, sorry. 11/10/2005 12:34:14 AM |

He's socially moderate and very conservative on economic/business issues. Of course, he's much more honest and has more integrity than Bush/Cheney, and I'd trust him much more on National Defense.11/10/2005 9:24:36 AM |

They just might in 2008 (especially since the Republican field is looking kinda thin), but there are concerns about his age.11/10/2005 12:08:14 PM |

I think in the last primary, he demured to help prevent a major bloodbath in the Republican Party. If he were the frontrunner in the primary, I think he'd put up a stronger fight. If placed up against the Democrats, I'm sure he'd fight tooth and nail. 11/10/2005 12:18:52 PM |

McCain would do well if he was actually nominated by the Republicans. The uber-conservatives aren't going to vote Democrat and a majority of them aren't going to give the election to one by voting Third Party Dingbat. Moderates like him, as do quite a few Democrats.
The problem is that, as long as those uber-conservatives have a say in who gets run, they're going to oppose McCain right up until the moment that he is, as they see it, the lesser of two evils.
I think there's quite a bit to be said for the theory that he didn't throw down harder in 2000 simply because he didn't want to rip the party asunder. If he'd had a clear chance at winning the primaries, he could have afforded to be a little bit harsher to other candidates.
I hope to God that his age doesn't cause a problem and my less-enlightened party comrades recognize that he's the only guy with a shot at winning in '08 the way things are now. 11/10/2005 6:01:38 PM |
