"Man killed walking home after party

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SULTAN, Wash. -- A man walking home after his 55th birthday party because friends and family believed he was too drunk to drive was struck and killed by another vehicle, police said.

Benjamin A. Wright's keys were taken at the party, and he was told he should stay at his son's place.

He said he was going outside to smoke, but apparently began walking home instead. He was fatally struck by a car about 10 p.m. Sunday in the eastbound lane of U.S. 2 in this town about 40 miles northeast of Seattle, Police Chief Fred Walser said.

Wright died at the scene and the driver, a 54-year-old woman, was treated for minor injuries at a hospital, police said.

There was no immediate word on whether charges would be filed. Walser said the woman apparently didn't see Wright in the road."

of course it would be truly ironic if the woman was drunk, but it doesn't mention it

The irony is he probably would have managed to make it home had he attempted to drive, at the very least he would be alive.

Actually, there are probably other flavors of irony to this also.

yes, it is ironic because the act that was supposed to keep him safe (his friends taking his keys), actually got him killed.
And as i said, had the woman been drunk (or even more, had she been someone from the same party he just left), that would have been off the charts ironic.

of course, "it's not funny if you have to explain it" applies here i think.....

^^^ and of course, it's also ironic that virtually nothing that Alanis Morissette mentions in that annoying song is, in fact, ironic. Most of it is simply coincidental, or just plain bad luck.

Irony

1. The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.
2. An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning.
3. A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect. See Synonyms at wit1.

#

1. Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs:

This is about as ironic as a drunk guy walking home and getting runover by a woman.

calling a song "ironic" when none of the supposed ironies are indeed ironic. THAT is irony.
