Well, I personally like the fact that they've had the same photograph on the front page for well over a year. They need to put out a PDF copy of the paper every day, and then archive old copies in a manner in which they are accessible. I suppose that just makes too much sense to work in practice. 11/9/2005 10:22:22 AM |

That article was sidestepping the real issue. Of course this message board isn't fully anonymous and of course relavant info can be gleaned from here when crimes are committed.
The issue here is that there is no complaintant and insufficient evidence that a crime occurred and that the people in trouble were involved.
This article was just damage control. Typical strawman arguments that we all agree with and have no relevance to the contraversy.

lighten up about what? i didnt think he came across as uptight or pissed off about anything that happens on here.
he never said he regrets the fact that TWW can be pretty harsh and he never said it should stop. all he said was that we shouldn't act as if we're above the law on here. if someone breaks the law in some fashion on here and law enforcement asks him to cooperate, he more likely than not will cooperate and he isn't going to assume liability for the things that a few bad apples may do.11/9/2005 2:03:28 PM |

Ok lets say that you and your friends get together and over a few cases of beer decide to create a bulliten board where you can discuss your activities with other NCSU peoples.
you decide to name it after the legendary NCSU party road so you can get more attention just to see how big you can get something...
it works, it becomes massive, it becomes so large that the police take notice, no longer can they talk about the huge party at so and so's house with out that getting busted...
your creation is now no longer yours and your friends... its now pretty much what you wanted it to be, the student bulliten board, downside you can't talk about upcomming parties at friends places, upside the whole campus is using your creation... and thats pretty neat...
then you get old, you get married, your little creation takes on a life of its own, its still kinda neat that you started it, so you still fund it privately with cheap advertisements and subscriptions... idiots on your little project decided to cause a lot of trouble. the police start asking you about it, what are you gonna say...
Are you going to stand up for these idiots that have taken your friendly creation and turned it into something resembling a car wreck? Are you going to take liability for something you don't have time to deal with? 11/9/2005 2:22:10 PM |

This is one of the articles (from Monday?):
Quote : | "Off the Web and onto the streets...at least
Students probably don’t know tuition is going to go up $325 next year, but they are definitely familiar with the scandal surrounding the posting of compromising pictures on the popular college Web site Facebook.com. For those readers who only get their news from my column, which I hope is none, here is a quick summary. Some underage students in Alexander Residence Hall are in trouble because their resident adviser found pictures on the Internet of them drinking in their room. There is more to the story but this is an opinion column not a news story. Plus I am not really interested in discussing the merits of the case except for this one point — I hope campus officials, be they administrators or resident advisers, have better things to do than surf the Internet to tattle-tell on students for drinking cheap beer. I am more fascinated by the reaction of the student body. A quick glance at The Wolf Web, N.C. State’s unofficial Internet message board, offers some insight into what students are thinking. I don’t want to be the first one to point this out but the reaction is not that positive. In fact, I would venture to say the most hated person on campus right now is Paul Cousins, director of the Office of Student Conduct. “[P]aul cousins is a f***ing douche bag,” proclaims one post presumably from a student. Those sentiments are not just reserved for Cousins as others involved with the incident are feeling the verbal wrath of upset students. One disturbing post calls for the “burning and crucifying” of the resident adviser responsible for bringing forth the allegations. In fact, the chatter on the Internet surrounding this case may soon lead to additional disciplinary charges. Technician’s Haley Huie reported on Friday that Cousins is investigating alleged threats made on The Wolf Web. Is that type of reaction warranted? Is it necessary to call out particular administrators? Has the debate strayed from the issue at hand or have the comments of a few crossed the line? This is not the first time that an administrator has become the scapegoat of a larger issue. Here is a picture caption from Lynn and Burke Salsi’s book “The Campus History Series — North Carolina State University.” “On advice from Dean Edward Cloyd, the Faculty Council cancelled the annual Finals Dance because it was to be held on a Monday night and it might disturb neighbors. The decision was made in February, but the students weren’t notified until April. There was no time reschedule; on April 27, 1938, 400 students protested by marching to Capitol Square and burning Dean Cloyd in effigy.” All of that over a dance? Those students literally torched a life-size puppet of Dean Cloyd in the middle of the street. I guess they didn’t have a place like City Limits to go and dance the night away. Although their titles differ, Cousins has the same responsibilities as Cloyd did — keep the students in check. What has changed since the days of burning administrators in effigy? Today debate and discourse take place behind a veil of secrecy, behind the guise of a computer terminal. Students who disagreed with Cloyd’s decision to cancel the Finals Dance had to publicly demonstrate their disdain. They had to show themselves to their fellow students. Today students can simply hide behind a screen name and make their feelings known with the simple click of a button. Unfortunately this instant communication tool lacks accountability. I doubt that in an open public forum would we hear students calling for the public execution of an administrator. But it certainly can and has happened on the Internet. Obviously the solution is simple — burn Paul Cousins in effigy in the Brickyard. No not really, but it’s better than simply spouting off nonsense on a message board. University administrators and decision makers are more likely to react when faced with public opposition. Without such public, “in your face” demonstrations, university officials will continue to abuse their powers when enforcing university policies. Did I mention tuition is going up?

Jacob Morgan The Wolf Web Developer, Administrator
I must admit I was quite surprised to hear about the recent incident involving N.C. State students incriminated by online photographs of alcohol consumption in Alexander Hall.
Students' drinking in their dorm rooms certainly was not the part that surprised me. The widespread attention didn't even surprise me, as the local media have always been infatuated with college students and their drinking habits.
I was only surprised that it took this long for something like this to happen, and that it did not involve The Wolf Web, a site that has been tagged by some as the epicenter of online mischief involving NCSU students.
So while TWW was not the center of this particular controversy, I would like to take this chance to explain where it fits in the broader state of online law enforcement.
If online law enforcement was a game, the enforcers would be winning. They are not leading because of a dominating presence, but rather because online perpetrators do not recognize their presence at all.
People continue to question the capacity and competence of traditional law enforcement to operate in a virtual space. The most common mistake committed in online crimes is the false assumption of anonymity.
Users on TWW and other sites revel as they anonymously masquerade around the site, doing and saying what first comes to mind with virtually no inhibitions. Users often openly discuss private sexual matters, their opinions on certain news stories, tell embarrassing stories, verbally attack other users sometimes to a dehumanizing extent and profess racist propaganda and other hateful messages. These acts repeated continuously for 24 hours a day online tend to instill an assumption of anonymity.
Then a crime is committed.
TWW has witnessed many crimes including physical threats, staged suicide broadcasts, possession of stolen merchandise, online hacking, stalking and drug dealing. This sense of online anonymity built up over the past months will quickly evaporate during the criminal investigation.
As someone who has been involved (cooperatively) in investigations with almost every tier of local and federal enforcement, I can assure you, if authorities decide to pursue you, they will get you, and in most cases will have compiled a mountain of evidence that dwarfs what could be obtained from a conventional crime scene.
The evidence is usually definitive including Who (Hey Einstein, remember two years ago when you registered with your @ncsu.edu email?), What (So, "I'M GOING TO KILL YOU [expletive]" must have been a typo?), When (Posted at 11/8/2005 7:21:53 PM +/- 500 milliseconds), Where (Sitting at your computer in your dorm room, brilliant, I must say), and finally Why (Trail of 50+ inflammatory private messages).
Occasionally one of these critical elements will be unavailable, but it still beats the variety of hearsay, forgetfulness, dishonesty, and general inaccuracy accompanying a traditional criminal investigation.
I wish I could say that TWW administrators played an interesting role in online law enforcement, but we simply do not. We have occasionally taken stands against vigilant RAs with sometimes ulterior motives (sound familiar?), but for the most part we act as an echo chamber to the property authorities.
Authorities generally request information by email, and we send them a dump of information back to them as soon as possible.
However, with the abundance of incriminating online posts, photographs and blog entries certainly suggest that these victimless crimes revealed online are not targeted by law enforcement.
I think most would agree that historically these crimes have been enforced as often as say, jaywalking, another victimless crime.
And finally, some people may question (to put it lightly) our obedience to law enforcement organizations who have regularly acted against student interests.
To those people I ask, would you put your own butt on the line for thousands of college students who continually swear at you, swear about you, swear about your wife, and (my favorite actually) photoshop images of you in suggestive positions with livestock?
However, after all of my whining, I must admit we are in a unique position being witness to some pretty crazy stuff and I refuse to assume liability on behalf of the small percentage of our users that do such idiotic things.
