Randomly my computer will come up with something that looks like an error message saying I have critical errors on my PC. When I hit cancel, it brings up a web page for some software-"Winfixer 2005". Neither ad aware nor Norton Internet security even recognizes a problem. Any ideas? I can take screenshots if necessary. 11/12/2005 10:59:27 AM |

Official Description: This program uses clever business tactics to lure the user into buying something that is not necessary. They have 2 versions available to the public, a bought version and a trial version. The trial version, downloaded from freedownloadscenter.com, came bundled with a search bar from WhenU, as well as a free download manager.
Comment: This program displays cookies as security threats. This may be true in some situations, but it is not necessary to spend $39.95 to delete them. Internet Explorer does the exact same thing and its free. After you remove the software Winfixer is bundled with, it is no longer a threat. The application will function as it did before with the bundled searchbar from WhenU. " |

I had some problems with that on a faculty member's laptop. I had finished cleaning out Win AntiVirus Pro 2006 or whatever the hell it was and also run scans from Spybot and MSAS, but the WinFixer ad kept popping up whenever I would go to a MS-related website.
I realized after a minute or two that the IE pop-up blocker was turned off, so I activated that, and I also did a search in the registry for winfixer...found one key, deleted it.
I had to give the laptop back pretty soon after that, so couldn't thoroughly test to see if it got rid of the winfixer popups. From what I could tell they seemed to have stopped. 11/14/2005 2:23:49 PM |
