they still give me doggie treats when I bring my dog to the drive up teller now.

She won't eat them, though.

It was better when I got candy.

First my pediatrician gave out balloons then stopped because it was a choking hazard. Next he gave out lolllipops but parents complained that it was also a choking hazard. Finally he just gave out stickers.

Yeah, you put some of your hair clippings into a "machine" with a wizard on the side and it spit out some toy or other.

I was just thinking the other day... People that get all uptight over small things like this and the people that cave under the pressure (from lawsuits no less) pretty much ruin childhood one bit at a time. I think of all the fun stuff I experienced as a kid and I recognize that there is no way my kid can do those things now. I'm not sure if it is me being so old now that I can no longer see through the eyes of a child or if it is a real tangible change in society.

I remember when:
1) You could have toys that looked like guns - megatron (they changed him to a tank so he wouldn't look like a gun), lasertag, water guns that looked like a real uzi. Not that I don't recognize the reason for change. Society has changed a great deal since then. Just a memory from a simpler time.
2) No car seats, seatbelts. I remember rolling around the backseat of a car as a child. It was fun. Now I see the obvious need for a carseat. I do think they have taken it a bit overboard lately. I don't know the actual law but now I think they require a booster seat until age 6. The kid and (cynic) in me says the law smacks of being created just so industry X could get more money by forcing people to buy things but I usually come back to earth and see the safety concerns. More a commentary on my distrust of politicians than anything.
3) Toys didn't suck. Again, I'm an adult now so I have more of a nostalgia bias but diecast toys beat the pants off the plastic crap you see nowadays. Nothing better than a diecast Transformer. Now they have the plastic crap that falls apart when you touch them. It seems like the only series toys where you could buy an army of the crap and play with it (like TF, gi joe, he-man, MASK, etc.) that exist today all revolve around a deck of cards and bug-eyed emo freaks that have 5 foot hair.

I have to include the standard disclaimer... Now if I could just get those darn kids off my lawn.

one of my students went through the drive through at the local bank with a box full of dogs and said the woman gave him a whole handful of dog treats. I miss the "real" toy guns without the orange things on the end- and getting my grandfather to light the end of my candy cigarettes. I still see those once in a while though

that's the kind I always got, and when I smoke cigarettes now that's what I smoke (which is not very often)

My 5th grade teacher flipped out one time when we were pretending to smoke those candy cigarrettes. And no, she didn't think they were real...She just thought it was a bad thing to make into a candy imitation.

I can't say I remember that...but I do remember when the lady at Fantastic Sams who cut my hair sprayed a shitload of water in my ear and I wound up with an ear infection. Fun times.
