if you've never been, Appalachian is a good place to learn, and they have student discounts.

but other than for extreme beginners, anything in the east coast sucks ballsac.

Pullen park when it snows. Build a kicker and line up the picnic tables.

Or just drive to Snowshoe. It's worth the extra couple of hours.

I've been to App on several occasions and it's always been fun. I learned to snowboard there. They have really simple courses all the way up to some with ramps and shit.

Beech Mountain in N.C. had some excellent deals last year. It's really good for both beginners and people who are decent.

downhill skiing is offered as a pe elective and you can do snowboarding, its the best price you could get for like 5 days of skiiing and 4 nights at a hotel, comes out around 250, but i went there not knowing shit and left being able to carve and do some jumps

Appalachian has a full ski school at their slopes. The entire place is basically designed about being a place for families / beginners to go and learn. I would highly recommend going there.

Go somewhere cheap with a nice bunny hill.

I think saphire valley was the ultimate beginners place but I can't be certain. It was basically 2 hills, bunny and real easy.

Be prepared to spend day 1 on your ass. Be prepared to spend day 2 on your ass a little less. By day 3 or 4 you should be feeling somewhat comfortable on green slopes and ready to tackle blue. By day 7 your going to want to be in Virginia (Wintergreen). By day 10 your going to want to be in West Virginia (Snowshoe)

around you there are some, but my friend told me some of the best are like in Vermont/New Hampshire, into Canada, and over in Colorado.
Snowshoe is good in WV.

You could probably pull of either of those for six hundred, depending on the level of comfort you require and how much time you think your money is worth.


Bend is 35 a day for lift, that's cheap.

Snowshoe is absolutely the best place in the region but plan on going for more than a weekend because it basically takes a day to get up there. There's 57 slopes and a fair share of black diamonds

snowshoe is totally doable as a long weekend trip

leave friday afternoon, ski saturday and sunday, come home monday morning and be home by early afternoon.

snowshoe is the best place that's close, and it's fine for a beginner, but if you know what you're doing, there are only really 2 slopes that offer any challenge at all. the other big problem is that you spend more time dodging dumbasses than you do skiing.

I was there a few years ago with a brand-fucking-new board and some punk ass skiers were pushing eachother around and one fell right on my board and chipped it. Son of a bitch.

On the plus side, there is nothing like driving the 5 minutes to Silver Creek, straping on your board and riding down the slope to the pancake house for breakfast.

^^i totally mauled an old man last time i was up there...he and some little tiny kid skiied right out in front of me. i can't remember what slope it was on, but it was a black diamond. they were both snowplowing.

now what in the hell are you doing on an expert slope (granted, snowshoe black diamonds aren't that hardcore, but they're still the hardest slopes on the mountain, and not for a beginner) if you can't even parallel turn?

anyway, i was HAULING ASS, and i couldn't really avoid missing both of them. it was just a matter of which one i hit, and i decided to take the old man out. i turned as hard as i could to try to miss him, and to bleed off as much speed as i could, but i still knocked the shit out of him.

i didn't really feel bad about it, either. he brought that one on himself.




but that's my big gripe about snowshoe. it's a clusterfuck. it's hard to ever really cut loose and give it all you've got, jumping off stuff and hauling ass, because the place is littered with people skiing on terrain well beyond their capabilities.

of course, nowhere else i've ever skiied in the east is any better in that regard, so i still say go to snowshoe.

I'd aggree that snowshoe is prob the best close place but alot of the ppl there suck
for example i was teacing my gf how to board on the GREEN slope (note green for beginner) and of
course she fell well some douche going all out ran into her and cussed her out about falling

also dont go to the places in NC b/c half the time there to icy to ride/learn anyways

i don't know, i don't think that snowplowing is QUITE as bad as that gay "slide down the mountain sideways at 3 mph" shit that so many snowboarders do. that scrapes snow off the slope like nothing i've ever seen.

and yeah, it pisses me off to no end when snowboarders sit down in the middle of the slope. i always make it a point to fly by them and spray them with snow if i see them doing that shit.

i don't really like it when i yard sale and they head towards my scattered gear so they can bunny hop over it instead of helping me pick it up so i don't have to climb back up the mountain...but thankfully that's only happened a couple of times.



good snowboarders are fine by me...i like watching them do tricks and stuff (which i usually do when i'm waiting for them at the bottom of the hill ). there are just so many shitty ones. I guess it's because it's the trendy thing to do nowadays. plus, shitty snowboarders are more annoying than shitty skiiers for the aforementioned reasons.


***when i say "shitty", i don't mean "slow" (although most of them are).

Honestly, if you're a n00b, it doesn't matter. The slopes in the east are shitty regardless. Altho, I wouldn't recommend Snowshoe or any of the bigger places around here, and try to go during the week so it's not as crowded and you won't get run over. I'd be happy to take you on one of my trips.

I wouldn't recommend Snowshoe because the beginner slopes are weird imo. They're sloped the wrong way for me, being a regular footed boarder. I kept having issues with getting stcuk in those stupid wire fences and having to hop my way out.
