90 celica when i go to start it when it's cold out and when the engine is cold the start wont turn over just click.
if i keep trying for about 3 minutes the car will eventually start but puff out a bunch of gas from being cranked over so much. im guessing it's the battery although my lights and everything work when the car is off.
when the engine is warm, or if the temp is warm outside (unlike today) the car will start right up like always.
im going to get the battery checked by autozone today, any other ideas?
occasionally when starting up while cold and engine is cold the tach will jump although the starter is making no noises.
thanks 11/18/2005 1:08:52 PM |

have you checked the cold start injector? what motor is in it? All I can reference for a toyota is a 22RE (2.4L inline 4cyl). You pull the cold start injector right out of the intake. Hold it out and have someone try to crank it (just for a second). If it spews gas, it's functioning, if it doesn't then it's not. As far as the "click," is it a single click, or a "click-click-click-click" for as long as you hold the key over? 11/18/2005 1:15:42 PM |

it's actually proved to be one of the most reliable cars in my family. the only thing i've had to replace in the 50,000 miles i've driven it was a clutch, altenator, and battery. still on the original oil too .
besides if someone hits me on campus im not going to cry that's what beater cars are for. 11/18/2005 2:09:13 PM |

My cold start injector was disconnected on my Mk III Supra. Usually it would turn over but it wouldn't actually start up. 11/18/2005 2:40:36 PM |

Have the battery checked or try to jump start it. If it's not even turning over with the starter, then battery, starter, or solenoid problems.11/18/2005 3:13:12 PM |

you might want to check the battery. if you have one that's getting weak, it will crank the motor in warm weather but a cold morning a lot of times will let you know you need a new battery 11/18/2005 4:51:44 PM |

ok just got battery checked @ autozone it's not that.. guy said it was the starter. well at least i know where it is now so i can go ahead and hit it when it acts up in teh cold.
where can i get those new contacts, i might just take apart the old starter and tinker with it. lol it's the original car has 144k city miles. 11/18/2005 5:36:43 PM |

Beat the shit out of the starter, that works on my yota 11/18/2005 5:46:39 PM |

For the 'yota starters, the solenoid contacts reside under the pentagon-shaped cover on the back of the starter/solenoid assembly. It's a Nippondenso gear reduction starter.
Three screws hold the cover on (7mm head), and then you'll need a 14mm socket to take the contacts out. While you're at it, take some sandpaper and clean the plunger ring.
Joel...I called Hoffman and whatever fucktard I talked to said they didn't have any Denso solenoid contacts. However, WorldPac has 'em, which means T-Hoff should have them or be able to get them (even though said dildo said they didn't)...and that means Car Quest can now get them. They are set up to order WorldPac at the store now.
I just picked up a couple from my buddy Rex at Happy Jap's.
By the way, I do these all the time, and if you don't want to R&R the starter and do the contacts yourself, I can do it. 11/18/2005 6:20:22 PM |
