The dust cover on one of my front brakes seems to have too much play in it: it both rotates about half an inch in either direction causing it to hit the caliper and also moves in and out (towards the rotor and away from it) causing it to touch the actual rotor. This combination is making the cover hit the caliper upon any movement making a pretty annoying sound. I don't have the tools with me to take off the rotor right now to see the cause of the mov't.

Would the best fix probably be to just remove the dust cover itself (ala http://www.norseperformance.com/imagesbraking2.htm) or is there a better solution?

(This is a '97 Saab 900 SE btw)

I'm not sure, but you could get a lot more help from people who know Saabs on the forums here: http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/index.php

for a temp fix just get a long skinny screwdriver or somthing solid and press against the plate bending it out of the way all the way around the plate. when you have time take the wheel off and check to see if all bolts are tight

just remove them - looking at a diagram and trying to remember the front brakes on my GF's '96 900t they're only held on by a couple of bolts that don't connect to anything else
