We had to christianize them.
And "Latin American" sounds a lot better than "dirty ass pagan American."

Spain and Portugal were in control of the area, and they had to differentiate themselves from the English and French regions in the North.
Spanish and Portuguese were thought to be more Latin-derived than French and English, so the South became Latin-America, the North became Anglo-America.

Latin America got it's name from the "Latin" languages primarily spoken, Spanish and Portuguese. Latino refers to people from these areas for obvious reason of the "Latin American" nomenclature. Both Spanish and Portuguese are considered "Latin" languages because they are actually derived from the original Latin language.11/22/2005 12:53:01 PM |

Latin is one of those words that looks and sounds funny the more you read it and say it. 11/22/2005 1:16:24 PM |

they're called latinos because these days it's considered racist to call a mexican a mexican, just like calling a honkey a honkey or a nigger a nigger. 11/22/2005 9:37:18 PM |

Depends on the Mexican. Some like the term, some don't.
Calling a Mexican a greaser, however, is an insult...11/22/2005 11:55:49 PM |
