Just bought a 93 Honda Accord and doing some minor repairs to it. One thing that is bothering me is that when I am going down the street and I punch the gas, the car gets a hanging stall to it. By hanging stall I mean that it will sputter and stay at the current speed.
It doesn't do it as much at all in park or in neutral and the transmission is fine for sure.
Could that be the fuel filter or would it be something more serious like a fuel pump? 11/22/2005 1:18:02 PM |

Does it eventually "drive out of it" meaning it eventually accelerates and the problem is resolved at higher RPM? You just bought it, have you put gas in it since? Do you know how long it sat before you bought it? It could be something as simple as bad gas. I chased a similar problem in my yota, finally added some fuel treatment crap and burned through most of the bad gas. It's all better now. If it's running fine idling and the majority of the time, only giving you problems when you "punch it" then i doubt it's a filter or pump, perhaps an injector, but i'd check out the simple stuff first.
I'm sure someone will respond and tell me how stupid/wrong I am, but just trying to help. 11/22/2005 1:26:02 PM |

just go ahead and replace the fuel filter, since it should be done anyway and it's very easy.. and if tha doesnt fix it do the fuel pump how are ur plugs on the car and air filter etc? the fuel filter on my old integra went bad causing the car to suffer greatly. supposedly the fuel was dripping through the filter and not spraying through causing the car to suck ass while running. I dont know if that's the case for this car though.

I'm probably just going to go ahead and get a new filter and an injector cleaner. It has sit for about 6 months before I bought it... it's a great car, only 149,000 miles on it **For a 93**... but I don't have legal tags on it yet so I haven't driven out the bad gas yet and I don't know too much about it. 11/22/2005 2:38:52 PM |

Any reputable fuel filter brand will come with the banjo washers.
Could be a whole slew of things, not to mention you don't know when the distributor cap and rotor were last changed (maybe never), and you don't know what the plugs look like...and you don't know where the ignition timing is set. Is it even running on all cylinders under load?
Injector cleaner (a GOOD brand) and a fuel filter are good starts, though. Each needs to be done every now and then anyway. 11/22/2005 6:36:51 PM |

About it running on all 4 cylinders under load... Don't know how to check that, not really a mechanic. I just went out to try it, Haven't started it in over a week. It cranked a little sloppy, and sputtered for a good 8-10 seconds, but after that I didn't have to do anything but let it run. I have noticed that the check engine light is on and am wondering is there a jumper that can be done to any of the harnesses to make it blink codes that I can match up to a list somewhere???

Yep. Should be a blue connector under the dash on the passenger side. Might be two. One will have two conductors, the other three. You can take a paper clip and jump the two-conductor plug. Switch on ignition, and the check engine light will flash error codes.
I do work on cars on the side. I may be able to take a look at it sometime this week if you'd like. I'm very reasonable. 11/22/2005 7:24:30 PM |
