Wait. So helping a few kids out negates invading their country based on lies and killing 100,000 of their people, torturing their men and raping their women at Abu Ghraib and other prisons, using white phosphorous and napalm-like M77 bombs on civilians in Fallujah, etc. Weren't they better off under Saddam? Didn't we say he was bad for torturing people? Did Saddam kill 100,000 Iraqi civilians (and wound thousands more) in a two and a half year period?
Can't you see that this is pure propaganda? Sure, the soldiers may give the kids some candy and they may do a few nice things for these people, but it is a charade. It is for PR purposes. They can put a camera on that and show it to the American people and say "Here. Look. The War is Good." But they're not showing you the pictures of bombed out cities, dead burned bodies in the streets, and mangled children with their arms and legs blown off. They're not talking about the 100,000 Iraqi civlians that have been killed in this insane war.
How are the Iraqis better off? How are they better off when 100,000 plus of them have been killed, and more and more die each day in the chaos and violence that has broke out as a result of the war? 11/22/2005 3:52:43 PM |

of course, because obviously no American servicemen are decent human beings, and have a genuine interest in outstretching a hand to those in need.
fucking idiot. that's personally insulting in my book, when that's half of the reason i signed my name on the line.11/22/2005 4:03:53 PM |

Of course some American soldiers are decent human beings and help out the Iraqis because they care. My point is that it is PR propaganda for the media and others to use these small gestures to attempt to justify the war and paint a rosy picture of what is going on there.11/22/2005 4:16:30 PM |

so let me get this straight...
reporting bad things is news
reporting good things is propaganda, probably because the same illuminati and jews who control the government also control the media

The point is that these "good things" are minuscule in comparison to the great harm that has been done to their country. 100,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed in this insanity. Giving a piece of candy to a kid means nothing in comparison to the needless slaughter of 100,000 people. Thousands more have been maimed and injured.
The media should be objective and give attention to the pros and cons proportionate to their overall worth. The media should be talking about the harm done to Iraq in this madness 99.9% of the time. But have they done so? Do they show us the pictures of mangled children with their limbs blown off? Do they give us updates nightly on the total number of Iraqi civilians killed in the war? Do they give voice to Iraqis who oppose the American invasion and occupation of their country?

100,000 Civilian Deaths Estimated in Iraq http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A7967-2004Oct28.html
Quote : | "The researchers called their estimate conservative because they excluded deaths in Fallujah, a city west of Baghdad that has been the scene of particularly intense fighting and has accounted for a disproportionately large number of deaths in the survey.
"We are quite confident that there's been somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 deaths, but it could be much higher," Roberts said. " |
And this article is dated from October of 2004. The death toll is surely much higher than this now.

The 100,000 figure is pretty accurate. I heard an interview with the guy who oversaw the survey, and it was very well done.
However, the study didn't discriminate between civilians and combatants. The guy made sure to be very clear about this point. This is 100,000 extra people dead than what was average under Hussein. The civilian/combatant ratio of this number is totally unknown.
P.S., this is a dumb thread. Children are cute! Yay war! Saddam was opressing their cuteness!
^^ Give me a source discrediting it? The only aspect that was "discredited" was that the figure covered insurgent deaths as well. The study never claimed it didn't.

ding ding ding ding ding
salisbury wants you to believe that that was 100,000 8 year olds that died at the hands of bombs and white phosphorous shells that targeted their orphanages.
whenever civilian deaths is brought up, that 100,000 number is always the one he spouts, when everyone knows that's not an accurate number.11/22/2005 4:39:49 PM |

do you really not understand the definition of the word "civilian" or how it is different from the word "citizen"?
Someone who is engaging in armed combat can not be considered a civilian no matter what the circumstances.11/22/2005 9:41:52 PM |
