I couldn't give a rat's ass to see the Marlins leave Miami. The city loves the Dolphins and the Heat. Miami is not a good place for a MLB team and there is a history of bitterness between county taxpayers and the Marlins franchise. The Marlins do a horrible job of marketing in the city, too. Plus the location of Dolphins stadium is not conduscive for going to games on a weekday. People would only want to drive out there once a week (like to a Phins game, for example).

With that said, Charlotte won't be the next home to the Marlins and if Charlotte is smart, they'd do business with somebody else.

um, the carolina marlins would be completely retarded. its right up there with the la lakers in completely ignoring geographics in naming your team. charlotte is landlocked, not coastal at all

Actually, the Heat does have a significant fanbase in Miami.

The Marlins do not. Marlins do not market the team well and nobody wants to drive all the way out to Dolphins stadium on a weeknight to see a team owned by a guy the city hates.

I think Charlotte could be a better place for a baseball team than Davie, FL. I also think Charlotte would be better off with another team than the Marlins.

yes but we know that charlotte is a haven for sub tropical wildcats like panthers and bobcats which are indigenous to the region

yeah but who outside of the state would know that. bobcats and panthers could live anywhere with trees. marlins tend to need a little bit of water

they could just call them the Carolina Marlins...I mean really the state has good fishing

The Utah Jazz and LA Lakers are wayyyy worse, it really wouldnt be hard to sell.

My favorite team moving to home state,

I don't see how Charlotte would be receptive to an owner who doesn't show much care for their team.

Especially after they got the Hornets (Shinn..?) to leave after he alienated the fanbase.

If they're going to inherit "Shinn #2", they'll never let the team go there.

yeah i remember reading that and being surprised

i don't have any statistics to back me up

and i don't feel like doing any googling

but i'm sure that if you take into account the entire metro area, atlanta has a much, much higher population that charlotte

yes, the suburbs is what tips it in atlanta's favor. there is a higher population in the surrounding area of atlanta than that of charlotte. but still....

Carolina Smooth Dogfish

since thats all I ever catch...

here are some other really bad names that they could pick:

Bassmasters
Toadfish
Yellowfins

and my personal favorite:

Carolina Crappy

Just gotta stick with the fish somehow...and BTW...this will never happen.

Uh... the Meadowlands?

You know, where they're already going to be building a new stadium.

Also wouldn't surprise me if Jersey City made and attempt because they seemed to be heavy into revitalizing it the last time I was there.

And there's already a stadium in Trenton

You have no idea what you are talking about. THeir current owner has done great things witht he franchise and actually puts pmoney back into the team. Hell, he offered $220 million of his own money plus to cover any overrun costs and the city still said know. The franchise has won 2 World Series in 10 years, that is unfuckingbelieveable. They approach it differently but it clearly works.

Sure, but they now have the best pool of young talent in baseball by leaps and bounds. They did this same thing the year after the 97 world series and 5seasons later all of that talent was winning them a second world series. They tried holding in to the talent and have been a really good team the last couple years but it wasn't working so they are reloadind to make another run. Any city that isn't happy with 2 World Series wins in a decade just because they rotate talent is fucking pathetic and uinworthy of any pro sports teams

Charlotte can NOT NOT NOT support a Major League Baseball team. Atlanta is only a few hours away. There would be 81 home games a year compared to only EIGHT for football and baseball is the CLEAR #2 sport in the South FAR behind football. I'm not convinced Vegas or Portland can support a ML team either but I KNOW Charlotte cannot. Hell the Triangle might be a better choice looking at minor league attendance numbers and proximity to major markets (Richmond/Norfolk/Triangle)

Hell for hockey and bball there is a reluctance to have a television deal -- given baseball TV deals are FAR more expensive it would be a nightmare to get one locked up. The Braves would fight this move to the death as well because it would eat a portion of their fanbase.

"I think an NL team could work in CT for example. It would help fuel a rivalry with the Mets, much like the Yanks & Sox.
"

That would NEVER work. There are plenty of NL fans in CT that are ALL Mets fans. The AL fanbase is split (most say there is an Imaginary line called 'Munson-Nixon Line' that separates the fanbases!) pretty evenly in the state b/t the Yanks and the Sox. CT doesn't have the population to support ANOTHER team. As baseball crazy as that region is (and it is the CLEAR #1 sport by FAR) it couldn't support ANOTHER team..

why not just make the Durham Bulls a major league team.... Then you don't have to worry about taking away minor league attendance. The Bulls have quite a following as it is. Increase the size of their stadium by a bunch, plus the name recognition is already in place. Just a thought....

The Bulls had an off year this year, but they won back to back League titles not too long ago.

I can't see Charlotte getting a lot of support for an MLB team. Plus, the pro sports competition there is too crowded for a city their size. Having a lot of banks in one city can only do so much. Baseball's problem is there are too many teams to spread around. Baseball in a way is most driven by a hardcore fanbase more than any other sport, just cause you have 81 games to sell. Besides, everyone here are Braves/Yankees/Red Sox/Cubs fans.

Florida's attendance history (fyi):

Florida Marlins 1993 81 3,064,847 37,838
Florida Marlins 1994 59 1,937,467 32,838
Florida Marlins 1995 71 1,700,466 23,950
Florida Marlins 1996 81 1,746,767 21,565
Florida Marlins 1997 81 2,364,387 29,190
Florida Marlins 1998 81 1,730,384 21,363
Florida Marlins 1999 80 1,369,421 17,118
Florida Marlins 2000 81 1,218,326 15,041
Florida Marlins 2001 80 1,261,226 15,765
Florida Marlins 2002 80 784,519 9,806
Florida Marlins 2003 80 1,303,215 16,290
Florida Marlins 2004 78 1,723,105 22,091
