Question the war in Iraq?

I'm getting very ill at all this talk about people being patriotic and people who hate this country based on an opinion on Iraq, the President, and whatever political issue at hand. Its become what each issue is framed around, and I would say we owe it to the Right.

We're still basing opinions, whether valid or not, on who says them. Not on the question of their unique validity. Its been 4 years people since 9/11, EVERYONE DOES LOVES AMERICA.

It depends why he is suggesting we should pull out.

If he is proposing "the war is lost! Cut our losses and run!" then he is being unpatriotic.

If he is suggesting "The American military is so powerful it could defeat the insurgency in Iraq without ever leaving Germany! Lets show the world!" then he is simply being rediculously patriotic.

So war = patriotic, and no war = unpatriotic? And there's a linear scale in-between?

I am a strong supporter of this war and its continuation, but I hardly agree with that. It's simply a matter of whether the man believes he's doing right by his country in supporting the position he does.

I don't think supporters of the war should necessarily take the standpoint that the war should go on because it's "patriotic" to do so, but rather there should be a continual discussion between the two camps about why and how it should continue.

i can advocate the dumbest fucking ideas and still be a patriot. being patriotic is loving your country.

it is not contingent on anything except your own feelings towards your country.

if someone says "oh only patriots can believe this or that" then they are just a partisan douche

Oh, you're just asking that out of idle curiosity, eh?

As far as I can tell, people who joined the military and who are in right now are volunteers. Which implies that it's a professional career choice for those people.

So the answer as to why I'm not "over there getting blown up" (obviously you think the purpose of our men in uniform is to be eviscerated by bombs, but I digress) is that I don't think I'd be a very good soldier. As far as I can tell that's reasonable, as far as the current system is concerned.

But while we're on the subject of personal involvement, my brother does think he'd make a good solider and therefore is in the military -- I'm personally not too eager to see him "blown up," though, but thanks for the inquiry.
