I'm finally going to get around to installing some aftermarket gauges when the semester's over. My question is, do I really gain anything from buying expensive Greddy gauges or whatever? Are you just paying for the name? Each brand has different series of gauges too... is that just for a different visual style? All I want are some black gauges that look kinda similar. I will be mounting them above my headunit.
I found some el-cheapo autometers on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Autometer-Oil-Pres-Water-Gauges-2-1-16-2345-NEW_W0QQitemZ7985635555QQcategoryZ33677QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem and I'm wondering if they'll get the job done. I would probably buy these two (water temp & oil pressure) plus a voltmeter, basically replacing the inaccurate stock bullshit. The last thing I need is to have a cooling system failure and warp a rotor housing because I figured it out too late. 11/23/2005 9:52:19 PM |

quality goes up with the name. Nearly the same accuracy between brands though. 11/23/2005 9:58:42 PM |

if accuracy is the same, what do you mean by quality? 29 bones for two gauges that are about as accurate as spending way more seems like a good deal to me... 11/23/2005 10:05:14 PM |

VDO guages have a tendency to make a rattling noise. That is the only guage I personally have experience with. I have heard good things about stuar warner guages and cobalt guages. 11/23/2005 10:43:11 PM |

The GReddy gauges are available as a peak hold style unit. Price also depends on whether the gauge is mechanical or electric and what style back lighting it has. I have a VDO boost gauge and have had zero problems with it. I think it looks higher quality than the lower line autometers. 11/23/2005 11:28:21 PM |

the "auto gage" line(like the ones he linked to on e-bay) is auto meter's low-end still a decent gauge, but i would spring the extra $$ for one of the regular auto meter branded lines
sport comp, pro comp, cobalt, c2, lunar, carbon fiber, etc... lots of options, all good quality 11/24/2005 12:48:27 AM |

I'm satisfied with those so far. Mechanical Z-series oil press and water temp.
