I spend like an hour running around town getting some tools and the stuff I need to change my rear brake pads
I get about half-way through the procedure for the rear left and the MOTHER FUCKING bolt gets stripped and now I have no idea how to finish this.

Bolt gets stripped? as in the head rounded off, or the lack of thread on the bolt itself? 12/2/2005 2:45:30 PM |

the head got rounded off
I thought the little punk was actually turning, too, but no, it was just the wrench doing as thorough a job on the head as it could

I don't have visegrips or what the f ever PB blaster is
I have no way to get them with my car up on jacks and half-way through a brake change
fuck this shit, I'm just gonna do a quarter mile run into the tree at the end of the road here and have insurance drop off a new car with working brakes
the socket I have won't fit because the shitty socket set I have didn't come with the right driver, just an adapter... when I tried it at the slight angle it would fit in at, it rounded it off a little bit more

Where the hell you at? Where's the car at? I get back into town at around 6:30 or so, and I do this shit all the time.
I have SeaFoam Deep Creep, though...no PB B'laster...though I might just get some because it's a pretty orange color. 12/2/2005 3:04:26 PM |

ok, I managed to get the bolt off by using the obscenely long extension and disregarding the fact that if my car fell off the jack my hand would be forfeit... now I just need to find another random ass bolt to replace this one 12/2/2005 3:10:36 PM |

I'm guessing we're talking about a caliper bolt? You might be able to find a bolt that matches length, thread depth, thread pitch at a hardware or home improvement store, or call around to auto parts stores, they either stock or can order OEM caliper bolts. If you decide to match a bolt from a hardware store, don't skimp, get grade 8 (standard) or grade 12.9 (metric). 12/2/2005 3:17:05 PM |

ok I managed to get both sets of pads changed finally... terribly uneven wear on the pads, though... rear right had maybe half a mil of friction material left on it, left rear was about half-worn on the inside and 3/4ths worn on the outside... thoughts? 12/2/2005 4:30:22 PM |

grease those caliper bolts.
Actually the bolt you removed might be a special one (caliper bolt) that you will have to go the the autoparts store to replace.12/2/2005 5:09:10 PM |

like $10 each. 12/2/2005 8:54:06 PM |

if you dont know what pb blaster is you dont need to be doing the brakes on your car. and you probably used a 5/8 on a 15 mm to get the fool thing loose, with out pb blaster or wd40 12/2/2005 9:31:02 PM |

dude if you use wd 40 for anything besides potatoe cannons you don't deserve to be working on cars.
It's hydroscopic, so it eventually sucks up water and makes things rust more. PB Blaster for penetrating oil, or use silicon spray as a spray lube 12/3/2005 10:44:01 AM |

actually, i've found that carb spray works better than starting fluid. maybe because it doesn't make the mixture so rich. 12/3/2005 2:53:15 PM |

the gumout carb spray works the best, it doesnt evaporate as fast as the mac's and it doesnt melt the plastic, its about the only thing it works good for. i saw a propane powered one online before that looked cool as hell, metered exactly the right amount in, with a pushbutton ignitor 12/3/2005 2:59:25 PM |
