dependes on what you want from GnR.

If you want balls out, pure, unadulterated, hungry ROCK then the answer is clearly Appetite For Destruction.

If you want to see a big rock band get a little crazy in the studio and develop an ego, then get the Use Your Illusion albums. (and I am certainly not saying they are bad!)

greatest hits is a good cross-section. My only complaint is that they left out "Used to love her" and "Mr. Brownstone".

appetite for destruction made #61 on rolling stone's top 100 albums ever; personally i think it shouldve been higher, but then again, i love high-voltage bitchin' rock

heres the deal

#61 Appetite for Destruction
Guns N' Roses
1987 Geffen

Total Album Sales: 15 million
Peak Chart Position: 1

"The biggest-selling debut album of the Eighties, Appetite features a lot more than the yowl of Indiana-bred W. Axl Rose, the only thing still remaining of the original G n' R. Some of the band's assets were in fact subtle, such as drummer Steven Adler, who brought swing and disco breakdowns to the band's mighty metal. And while songs such as "Welcome to the Jungle" are all about urban pain, others, including "Sweet Child o' Mine" and "Paradise City," have sweet, yearning lyrics that put the band's musical ferocity in even higher relief. "A lot of rock bands are too fucking wimpy to have any sentiment or any emotion," Rose said, "unless they're in pain."

Appetite definately. I think if they had squeezed the Use Your Illusions down to one album it could have been right up there with Appetite though.

definitely Appetite For Destruction. It's the overall best rock album ever made, in my opinion.

the Use Your Illusions albums are really good, though...it's just that it's an impossibly tall order for either of them to be the best GNR album.

hell, Lies is good, too...but it's more in the Appetite vein (but with some acoustic/lighter songs mixed in), and definitely doesn't "out-Appetite" Appetite For Destruction.

There's really no point in buying a a 'greatest hits' compilation. you might as well buy the actually CDs, cause they're THAT damn good.

You can listen to Appetite for Destruction from start to finish without skipping any tracks. Careful if you're listening in you car though, cause you'll definetly start speeding

Uhh

how exactly did grunge/90's rock "own" G'n'R in any way?

There hasn't been a good true rock band since Spaghetti Incident came out.

what'll happen to you baby, i guess we'll have to wait and see

^AIC, etc were better than The Spaghetti Incident...The Spaghetti Incident shouldnt even be mentioned in this thread when you have options like AFD, Lies, UYI1, UYI2

No way. Back In Black is ok, but not even in the top 10 in my book. I'd put Dirt by AiC up there, though.

nah, the Seattle bands didn't own GNR by any stretch, but those three are really good (esp AiC).

all the GNR albums except Spaghetti Incident are fucking AWESOME. Spaghetti Incident is fairly mediocre.

That was my point--that album signified the end of rock.

dude, have you ever listened to Alice in Chains or early Pearl Jam/Stone Temple Pilots?

that's some good shit.

the end of rock didn't happen for several years after the decline of GNR (well, it never completely died, but it's in an almost vegetative state and has been for ohhh, 7-8 years)

^^I don't consider either of them "true rock" the way I do G'n'R.

Kind of a vague separation, but in my mind they're not the same thing.

well, they (esp AiC and STP) aren't totally rooted in the Led Zeppelin/Stones school of blues based rock, but they're still no bullshit rock bands in my mind.

Pearl Jam is kind of a different kind of rock band but in terms of mainstream metal alice and soundgarden at their prime had better vocals, less poppy/more artistic lyrics, more creative beats, varied riffs, and I'd argue effective solos even though they couldn't really match slash's shredding but only a couple of his solos were really spectacular anyways

Favorite GnR album is probably a mixture of Illusions 1 and 2.
