I haven't taken one and just signed up for FLF 201 since I took several years of French, including a semester's credit in France through NCSU. TRACS didn't bar me from signing up, so is there anything to prevent me from going ahead and taking the class without a placement exam?

about the only thing is a teacher being a douche

they do make you sign something at the beginning of the semester along the lines of "i'm qualified to take this test, by these means" and they give some choices, like meeting prereqs or certain scores on the placement tests, or else make you promise to obtain documentation. taking the placement test for german was something i never got around to, and nothing's happened.

correct. TRACS does not regulate it, the teacher does.

I guess you can always take the test at the beginning of the semester if your teacher asks for your placement score.

The first day, the prof will ask if you've taken the placement test. Eventually you'll get dropped/moved if you don't take it. It doesn't take too long and the course it placed me in was just right.
