^^
Why the assumption a math instructor is male?

MA416 is cross-listed with CSC416 ... Carla Savage is from the computer science department. Her main research is in graph theory, parallel algorithms and combinatorics. She's a full professor and does a fair job teaching/grading/amount of work from what I've been told by others.

i saw a considerable amount of females in that directory, not to mention all of my math teachers have been female, save one, but I guess thats the luck of the draw

[Edited on December 9, 2005 at 7:11 PM. Reason : other than that I did not really prefer savages teaching style but I suppose she was fair]

[Edited on December 9, 2005 at 7:11 PM. Reason : then again i dont think she graded anything]

I had Savage for CSC226. she definately made the class harder than Bitzer but oh well. I think she's a pretty average teacher tho

okay, thanks. And I think since coming here I've only had two female teachers, and a couple female TAs, so it's a pretty natural assumption for me.

one more question. It has the prereqs as "MA 242 or CSC (MA) 224, and proficiency in a programming language." So I'm wondering what proficiency is. I don't think I'll have too much trouble following logic or anything, but I've never bothered much beyond the basics with actual coding (though I am taking java next semester.)

Looks like you might have to model some of the things from the class using programs. I would guess that some examples would be provided since it is cross listed as a MA course. (might even have the code, but you have to modify it to the application at hand.)
Anyway, just send Dr. Savage and email and she will let you know.
