You Only Live Once , On the Other Side and Razorblad are all really good...the rest I haven't gotten to like yet.

They took all the gimmicky production away, but now that I've heard Julian's real voice through an album I wish they'd put the filters back on

So far this doesn't compare to Room on Fire...but that may change with time I suppose

i have heard a couple tracks from the album (thank you soul seek) and my first impressions (pun intended) are not very positive. and i am huge strokes fan so i definitely want the album to be great, but i'm definitely worried from what i've heard.

One of the mags (Spin perhaps?) titled their review "Is This It?"

At this point, I'd agree. I'm getting flashes of the Cramps, Kansas, B-52s, and AM Gold, and haven't heard any brilliant bass hooks or gutter symphonies...which is fine, but I'm getting a distinct whiff of lackluster. No decisions until at least six listens, though.

yeah, I mean, it sounds just like the first two, just "different" if that makes any sense.

^^^ Yeah, all the same elements are there, but the arrangements and production make it sound quite a bit different. A lot of the harmonic activity has been moved from the bass to the guitar, and the bass noodles more than on the previous records, so it sounds less like a chugging pop music box and more like...something else. There are familiar sounds to be found, but they're buried. Still, three listens after my earlier post, there's nothing that really grabs me like some of the hooks on the first two records. Meh.

As far as I can tell, on this record, they're not playing to their strengths. Nothing more, nothing less.

but some of the tunes are pretty stellar. "Heart in a cage" and "Vision of Division" are both pretty damn good.
