I've been sick the past couple weeks and in addition to medicine I'm taking vitamin C supplements since I hate OJ. I run out so I run up to walmart and since I've never been to this one I go to the pharmacy counter and ask where it's located. The teenage girl points me to a shelf.
Some lady overheard my conversation and hands me a bottle of Calcium. Thinking she was trying to be helpful I go "no thanks, I need Vitamin C". Here's how it went from here
Lady "It's the same thing" Me "No it's not." (I'm tired, sick and grumpy so I just want my Vitamin C and I'm gone) Lady "Yes it is" Me "No it's not. *sigh of frustration*" She's in the way of the Vitamin C so I can't just grab it and walk away. Lady "Excuse you young man. They ARE the same thing and I should know, I used to be a highschool chemistry teacher"
Without missing a beat I went
"Well now we know why you aren't!" I'm angry and usually I'd laugh or something but I was so pissed off I leaned past her and snatched up some Vitamin C. She was looking up me gaping mouthed.
The teenage girl was laughing her ass off behind the counter. I went to the front line paid and left and not until i got home did I realize just how funny it was. Put me in a great mood for the rest of the day.

However, she was handing me a bottle of Calcium. Not Calcium Ascorbate. Interesting though I didn't know that. Maybe she wasn't as dumb as she looks.12/12/2005 9:42:43 AM |

Wish this had happened to me when I went to get some Vitamin C Saturday-at WalMart. While I was there, I also needed to get my Dad some insulin syringes. The pharmacy had JUST closed, noone would answer the bell, so I got the store manager. He was arguing with me that he didn't have a key and I couldn't get any syringes. It wasn't funny till I told him that he was full of shit because he had gotten them for me last month. Pissed me off and still didn't get my Dad the syringes. Went to a different WalMart and got them though.

Got nowhere to run

So...what's the difference? I don't think I've ever looked at one of those labels. I give my chinchillas the little kiddy vitamin c tablets though. 12/12/2005 12:52:44 PM |

I'm gonna side with Raige on this one. Vitamin C may be a form of Calcium, but it's not a conventional Calcium supplement. It's a different formulation with a different intended effect on the body. When people ask for Vitamin C, they want a bottle that says Vitamin C. This lady was being a smartass.

Vitamin C isn't calcium.
Those supplements use calcium to produce a salt (calcium ascorbate). Vitamin C itself is ascorbic acid.
Now, using vitamin C as a treatment for illness is an entirely different topic... 12/12/2005 1:16:12 PM |

no no I was taking antibiotics and other meds for my lung infection. (still am). I didn't think I was getting enough Vitamin C in my diet, which helps boost your immune system. Just making sure all my bases were covered for recovering . 12/13/2005 1:34:17 AM |
