Only thread I found had expired.

Just got back from watching this. Very good movie, but dragged a little at the beginning. Jackson could've shaved off a couple of characters and lost very little IMO. Otherwise a great movie. Some people criticized Jack Black, but I think he did a pretty good job. There's going to be complaints about the CGI, especially during one scene with the dinosaurs.

Naomi Watts was fantastic. It's amazing the connection they established between her and Kong, even though she hardly said a word. Watching Kong kill people and dinosaurs recklessly is pretty funny too.

Movie was awesome, the part with Kong on the ice was great. And of course him whipping various animal's asses was great.

So was it at all like that game Primal Rage? Cause that is what the previews reminded me of.

When I saw the commercials and saw the Naomi Watts character having a "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" moment in what I suspected was the end where they are trying to kill kong I though they turned it into one of those movies. Where the girl "falls in love" with something that should be scaring the everliving crap out of her.

Then I heard a review on NPR. They were talking up the part where kong was defending her from the other monsters on the island to the point where she didn't want to go with her human rescuer because she felt like only kong could protect her. Makes sense to me. It was in the original but they didn't play it up as much as it sounds like they did on the new version.

Maybe they did play it up in the original and I was just oblivious but I seem to remember the guy coming to save her from kong and she went without hesitation or so much as a word (saw it a week or so ago).

So for those that saw it. How bad/good/present/absent was the irrational love toward something that someone should be appalled by angle? It is hard to suspend disbelief when the characters are not responding how people would really respond if it were to actually happen. IE love/argue to protect when you would really fear, fear, run, fear at every opportunity.

Well initially she was scared, and she did run. But when she ran she only found more trouble, and Kong was there to save her. If you have this gigantic gorilla, who you've established you can't run from, and one that you've seen protects you and doesn't want to hurt you, you probably wouldn't really feel any sense of fear. There was a turning point on her feelings towards the gorilla, and I'll let you watch the movie and see when/where/why it is that she comes to not fear Kong.

I went and saw the movie last night kind of wish I hadn't it was really long (3+ hours) and like other people have said it dragged quite a bit. Definately my favorite parts were the animated fight scene between Kong and the Dinosaurs and when the gigantic bugs attacked the people from the ship(everybody in the theatre was freaking out).

i didn't think it was dragged on, but one thing i found funny was that there were as many "sniffles" or people crying in this movie as there were in something like titanic.

I posted this elsewhere, however:

Quote :
"I enjoyed the movie, but the first hour of it dragged way too much for me.

If they had just put up title cards that said, "Desperate Producer needs to make a hit movie and has set sail for an uncharted/unexplored/whatever island with his cast, a playwright, and the ship's crew.", the first part would have been much smoother. The relationships established within the first hour don't really add terribly much to the overall story, other than showing why Driscoll would want to go after Ann.

The island natives came out of nowhere too. It was a completely jarring change of pace."

I saw this movie last night, I thought it was VERY good. I had no idea he died in the end though. I def. would have cried but we went with a couple of goofballs who continued to refer to King Kong as Ced and so it was hard to really get into it.

When King Kong beat the crap out of the T-Rexes, I was amazed....

Other than that, the movie was too long and kinda started dragging towards the end. Either way, I thought it was better than I expected....

And the little affection story between Kong and the girl isn't really too bad... They make it seem like she feels sorry for him more than anything, so it wasn't too irrational. I mean, he does save her life...

I was also impressed by Jack Black's ability to be semi-serious... He didn't do a bad job...

One of the best parts was when I went to get my drink refilled and a cop was cuffing a guy he had pinned on the floor in the lobby...

what was up with the kid in the movie reading "a heart of darkness" ? there was no need for that character or his relationship with that african sailor.

i just didnt understand why he was needed. i kept thinking the kid (who they make reference to a few times about not knowing where he came from) was going to play some important role, like knowing about kong in advance, or having escaped the island himself. cut this movie down to like 2 hrs 25 min and it is one of the better movies i've seen in a long time. the length makes it unwatchable again.

Yeah, he's definitely the most unnecessary character in whole film. Even as they introduced him I thought he was irrelevant.

the entire budget of the film

however many hundreds of millions it took

was entirely justified

solely to watch king kong jump off a ledge and dropkick a t-rex.

other than that, it was decent. my favorite part other than the dropkick was the audience's reaction to the two giant centipedes, and later to the bug fight scene. definitely should have been shorter, though.

It was ultra-present, ultra-bad. I got tired of the meaningful stares of every major character in the movie.
There just seemed to be so much filler in that movie. I was really disappointed.

It was a pretty good spectacle, but dear fucking god they shouldn't have cast Jack Black and that last line was a KILLER.

AND NOT IN THAT GOOD WAY.

That last line was stupid. I didn't know kong was going to die when I went into that movie. I got asked if it was weird to think the worm/bug things looked like uncircumsized penises afterwards.

As others have already said the fight scene and the bug scene were both awesome. The movie drug on forever for me and got kind of boring. I dont know...I laughed through most of it, didn't know it was a comedy, but never want to see it again...

Well, King Kong died in the first movie. And that was the famous line from the first movie.

And yes, the bug/leech/whatever swampy things did look like uncircumcised cocks. That was the first thing I thought when I saw it.

good grief

this was a shitty fucking movie

HOW THE FUCK DO CGI DINOSAURS IN 2005 LOOK WORSE THAN CGI DINOSAURS FROM 1993

has anyone in this thread mentioned the fact that they never explain HOW THEY GOT KONG OFF THE FUCKING ISLAND AND BACK TO NYC?

did they just throw a lasso around his neck and drag him behind the fucking boat? he certainly wasn't gonna fit down in Brodie's cage

i'm serious, i got on the Peter Jackson as "big movie director of the future" bandwagon after the 2nd LOTR movie, and kind of waned after the third one, but after this, fuck peter jackson

seriously how the fuck do you make a movie that manages to be both BLOATED and completely UNDERWHELMING at the same time???

i want my 200 minutes back

ok i'll put it this way

the dinosaur stampede killlllled my eyes

it might look better on dvd, with a smaller screen, and some more time to get it right

but it was just TOOOOO clear that i was seeing computer graphics, unlike Jurrassic park where I couldn't tell when they were using animatronics and when they used CGI, and still can't honestly

or hell, if i thought about it, i could even put it like this:

HOW THE FUCK DO CGI CREATURES FROM WETA IN 2005 LOOK WORSE THAN CGI CREATURES FROM WETA IN 2002?

Quote :
"Oh no, 'twasn't the aviators it was Beauty killed the Beast. (1933)"

And the 8th wonder of the world is not a giant ape. It is a giant rock... the one that everyone that didn't know Kong dies at the end has been hiding under, 'cmon people.

i think the combo of cgi and animatronics works well b/c they have something to match and it has to flow seamlessly. seriously i though that AVP was one of the better CGI done recently b/c you couldnt tell most of the time when it was there vs animatronics. im sure it is a helluva lot cheaper to just do cgi though which is why they probably shy away from it.

i thought kong and the bugs were well done most of the time, though yeah the dinos were a bit much.

[Edited on December 20, 2005 at 12:26 PM. Reason : prolly has more to do with size and the quantity in screen. dinos looked fine up close.]

There was so much filler in that movie they could have taken out. With the fight between Kong and the t-rexes, I kept thinking, "Are they done? Oh, no, they're fighting some more. How about....wait, no, they're falling...and falling some more....oh there's another dinosaur...still falling. Okay, done now? Nope, still some more fighting." By the time they got to the bugs I was done with the whole island thing. I should have just rented it.
