Take it your sister's not a "car person"? I'd say Jetta if you want that "near-luxury" feel, Civic EX sedan if small and good on gas is paramount, Civic Si or Scion Tc if she wants something kinda sporty, base Accord if the other choices are too small for her.

Mazda 3, any BMW, Hyundai, Kai, or Used Car on the lot - and you get $50 too

My sister works at the Millenium Mazda in Chapel Hill.

How to get $50 from my sister
Get a business card from me. And write your name and address on the back. Then take it to her, Dauo Vang, at Millenium Mazda. Buy a car and she'll send you $50 in the mail.

They also sell Kia, Hyundai, BMW, LOTUS, and Pre-Owned Certified cars... so, it doesn't matter what you buy, as long as you buy it from my sister and hand her the business card, she'll send you $50.

just make sure she knows about the maintenance requirements and $$$ beforehand since i assume she will not do any work herself. also, if it is an e46 auto... run away. the gm transmission they put in them tend to go out fairly early and a replacement is around $4000. i couldn't get out of a shop for less than $300 for anything other than an oil change. loved my car tho.

civic is a good suggestion. gets great gas mileage and the ex is pretty nice. maybe a used acura or a couple year old accord ex (rather that than a new base model personally). might could get a used lexus too (assume to her that won't be the same as a toyota since a scion isn't). maybe a couple year old volvo s40.

Why can't your sister make up her own mind? She's gonna get whichever car her asshole brother suggest she get, after consulting a message board for help?

5 speed mazda 3 or Tc

she'll have no idea that a Tc is a Toyota with a Camry engine... I'm not a fan of Jettas, and the new one looks like a Corolla. Might as well get a Corolla.

If she's 15 I would not spend anywhere near 20k on a car - it'll end up getting beat to hell and probably wrecked in a couple years anyway.

You can easily get a safe/reliable/somewhat fun car for under $10k: Volvo S70, Merc C230, SAAB 9-3's... all will be cheap enough to run and will be safe when she hits something while talking on the cell phone.

^dude you like have known me for all of 2 years?

for the record. my brothers first car was a 96 sunfire, his second 98 cherokee, and wasn't until his third car that he got the 03 C230, which my parents did not help with kkthx.

and also i might add i have never owned a benz. And that the STi is something i bought on my own credit score, own job, own money, etc, etc, etc...

and third...

STFU

and as far as not buying new. Not everyone wrecks their first car
