Anyone in/near the area know where to go or what to see? I'll be chilling there for a few weeks without a job and the only person I'll know will be working during the days. So where do I go during the day, and where do I go during the evenings?

Technically I'll be in Walnut Creek (closer to Oakland), so I guess I'm actually looking for stuff just NE of San Francisco.

Oh my God. I hate you. So homesick for California.

Go to Haight St. for shopping (Amoeba is the best record store I've ever been to) and really fucking good Thai food at Best of Thai Noodle House. Go to Chinatown and try to find Hangh Ah Tearoom (up Sacramento St., one street past Waverly). San Fran's Chinatown is the best I've ever been to, because it's not all markets and restaurants, it has neat stores, too. I've also never gotten a sketchy vibe there like I did in New York. Avoid the wharf, it's too touristy. Golden Gate park is awesome for chillin' out and people watching, across the street from Haight. Go to Little Italy, drink coffee at Cafe Trieste (the espresso will melt the paint off your car). Go up to the observatory at night (from Rebel Without a Cause). If you go over the Golden Gate bridge it's free to go to Sausalito, but you pay something like five bucks on the way back.
I never went, but there's a Ghiradelli (sp) factory. I've heard it's cool. I never went to Alcatraz, either.
If you've never been to a major city before, San Francisco is the place to go.
Oakland...I got lost there once. And I've never heard of anything to do there.
Go to Berkeley if you dig on consignment shops and stuff like that.
If you can, go to Monterey. Go to the wharf, eat clam chowder. Ask about a sandwich shop called Compagno's (are you writing this down?), eat there, best fucking sandwiches ever. Go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, pet the bat rays, poke the sea cucumbers, watch the sharks and tuna.
AND BASK IN THE WEATHER. Whatever temperature San Fran is when you get there is pretty much the same temperature it always is. Bring a sweatshirt and jeans, wear shortsleeves underneath.

Monterey is not close to San Francisco. It's a couple of hours south of San Jose. I've been there, and it's not that great.

Just walk a lot in San Francisco. I don't know what you like, but I love wandering around the city. I have spent close to a month in San Francisco altogether, and I think I've been everywhere except Alcatraz. They sell shirts there hightlighting their points of interest. Just go see them all. Lombard, Union, China Town (I wouldnt eat anything there, but that's me), Coit Tower, Ghirardelli (they have a very nice banana split, though I make just as good at home, and they crush huge ass bricks of chocolate with huge knives in front of you, and you see the whole old fashioned styled process of making chocolate), Pier 39 (huge colony of sea lions), Castro etc.

That is where my parents live.. well technically Concord, but it's closer to Walnut Creek. That is the seemingly rich town in the area. The downtown reminds me of Greenwich, CT... all upscale shopping.

Nice area. I'm out there for christmas a few days but I have NO idea what is really around there. I've onlyl ever been out there for 3 days at Thanksgiving.

As far as what we did.. went to Napa, Monterrey, San Fran, and at XMAS we are driving to Tahoe for skiing. This probably doesn't help at all though..

Yea we took it in from the Walnut Creek station into the Embarcadero stop. Then you can either walk the city or use the Street Car system. It was PACKED when we used it so we decided to just walk to Pier 39. It was like a 20 minute walk but the area around there is pretty nice so it's not too bad. Oh and no matter what the weather is in Walnut Creek chances are it is 100% DIFFERENT in San Francisco. The two climates are TOTALLY different..

You guys rock. I'm going to make a list of all this stuff since I'll have way to much time to just sit around on my ass waiting for my friend to get off work every afternoon.

i used to live in pleasant hill, where is right next to walnut creek... walnut creek is a really nice place to live. it is kinda 'white town' there is a mall called sun valley mall in pleasant hill/concord. couple of bars in walnut creek (near broadway plaza, i think..) but you should definitely go to the city (SF) on weekends.

sausalito is a nice place to visit, too. it is in marin county...

pleasant hill, walnut creek, danville, lafaytte, livemore, etc (the areas between oakland and concord) are rich cities on the east bay. of course berkley hills and oakland hills are extraordinary though. concord is a mix of ghetto, mid income, and some rich ppl. martinez is for retired old ppl. pittsburg and bay point are totally ghetto..

during the winter, it rains sometimes in walnut creek. but during the summer, it is just awesome. it never rains... blue sky, hot dry weather. you don't need a jacket like you do in san francisco.

there are so many places to visit in san francisco area.. it is lil pain in ass to list them now i love san francisco!
