looked down at the speedo in the S2000 today, and it registered about 75. i was like "HOLY SHIT, how'd i get going that fast?" i started to slow back down to about 45, then I was like "wait a minute, I'm not going anywhere NEAR 75 mph."

i think it's reading somewhere around 60-80% high. also, my odometer is reading 84k miles or something like that, instead of the 54k or so that the car actually has.

I can see how a speed sensor or something could shit the bed and cause the speedo to act up, but I don't see how that would magically increase my odometer reading by 30k miles.

[Edited on December 18, 2005 at 3:09 PM. Reason : it's a digital/electronic speedo/odo display]

[Edited on December 18, 2005 at 3:18 PM. Reason : it's probably your speedometer cable, runs from tranny to gauge cluster]

^^^no, i don't think it's the cable. in my experience, when a cable starts going bad, the speedo readings vary wildly until it completely breaks.

furthermore, there's no way an S2000 has a cable, because it's simply an electronic display. even cars with analog gauges mostly have small electric motors that drive them nowadays...the speedo cable is kind of an old skool thing.

and that still wouldn't explain why my odometer jumped up some 30k-odd miles.

Okay.

My guess.

TOTAL GUESS.

If what the odo displays isn't what it stores, and it actually stores the number of revolutions the wheel has made

and somehow that multiplier got fucked up

that would both increase your odo and speedo.

Or something.

if your abs light didnt come on indicating a wheel speed sensor problem, then your gauge cluster is probably fucked

a gear wont put 30k on the odo. youll likely be installing a different cluster, try to find one with miles close to what is actually on the car if you get used.

HAHA, that's gotta be it. the #s are about right, just doing a quick guesstimation.

the instrument cluster is not FUBAR--everything is right except for the speed and mileage (including trip odo).

that's gotta be it. i don't remember hitting anything, but maybe I did. I hope I did--i'd rather that be the case than having my car go "Christine".

Duke, if it says "km/h" next to the speed, hold down the select button for a few seconds. It'll beep and switch back to mph. By the way, I love using that trick to scare the shit out of people in my S2000..."You mean we're going 100 already???"

yeah, yeah...i switched it back when i got in the car this morning.

i know what happened now...i thought i'd held down the reset trip odo button as i was driving away from a gas station, but i hit the button beside it.

haha, that was actually my first thought when i read this thread. then i was like no way, duke seems like one of the last people that i know that would have such a brain fart...

i used to get a kick out of doing that to my mom when i was 15. she was nervous enough with the driving genes i've got and being a new driver (little did she know i'd been taking one of our cars out for 2 years by myself). then i'd hit the mph/kmh button. talk about flipping out when she'd check my speed on the beltline, haha.
