I have a laptop that I want to install XP on.

The laptop has NT on it now and I want to keep an exact copy of that install so if I ever needed to use it again for the purpose it is for I can copy back all the contents to the drive and it would work as if I never installed XP on it.

I know I can partition the drive and all that but thats not what I want. I want a image of the actual data on the drive w/ NT and then delete it all then install XP.

I have a laptop HD to ATA converter so is it as simple as hooking the drive up to my main machine at home and just copying all the data to a folder and store it there till I decide to put it all back as it was?

^no, not that simple.

plug in the laptop drive to a desktop (use jumper to set as slave or put on primary channel)

insert norton ghost startup disk (download ghost (pre 8.0) from wherever)

start system

make an image of the laptop hard drive, save on desktop drive.

use acronis trueimage

easier to find, plus when insalled just make the backup cd using their program to do so.

it's hard to find a bootable version of ghost that works.

version 9 sucks, but i've never had a problem with ghost bootables before that. version 8 is my favorite.
