I hooked up a ps2 to my cable modem by pulling the cord from the computer and sticking it into the network cable input on the PS2.

However, when I did my setup with the internet disc that came with the PS2, it couldnt make a connection.

Any suggestions?

best bet is to turn it off, unplug it for about 30 seconds then plug it back in, turn on and then let it reboot.

yea just unplug it, wait 10 secs, plug it back in.

You'll have to go thru the same process when you hook it back up to your comp.

Solution: get a router.

yeah if you get a router then you can have your computer and game system online at the same time...and when you get your 360 you can pull music and stuff off your computer to your 360

you can get wired routers for cheap ($30) at like best buy and shit.

You could probably get one for $10 on here or ebay.

they're stupid easy to setup.

Cable modem plugs into internet/wan port.

Computer/ps2/xbox/internetblender/whatever goes into one of the other ports.

Buy any old used router. New ones pop up all the time for $10 or less with rebates.

i got a router, and i got it all set up. the ps2 definitly sees the router, but it is "requesting DHCP configuration" and taking a long ass time to do this, fuck.

DHCP should be on by default.

I'm betting the cable you are using for the PS2 is a crossover when you don't need one anymore. Swap the cable from you pc to the ps2 and see if it works then.

You have the modem in the WAN port and the pc and ps2 in the LAN ports right? Also on some routers the connection closest to the wan port is tied to the wan port. Sometimes there is a bar above the two on the casing, sometimes not. So if you are using the WAN port you lose one of the LAN ports.

i tried flip-flopping the two ports, and my internet connection still works, so obviously they both work. i dont fucking get this. still "reqesting DHCP configuration"

is there a way to get my own IP and mask or whatever so I can manually enter the data

ok, the cable modem needs to be in the WAN port.

you can manually set the IP and mask if you wish. By default a Linksys uses 192.168.1.1 as the address for its private IP. So your computer can get its info from DHCP and most likely it will get the first address in the pool.

So on the PS2 choose an IP in the same subnet, but make it a fairly high number in the subnet (in this example 192.168.1.200 will work), mask of 255.255.255.0, gateway of 192.168.1.1 (for this example). If the ps2 needs DNS info as well you can use the same as your pc is using.

First one for a default router?

There should only be one default gateway. The only thing that should have multiple inputs would be DNS servers.

the problem with the switch is that it cant hand out an IP address. The "broadband routers" you buy in stores actually contain a router, a switch, a DHCP server, and a DNS server.

When using the switch, you're just splitting the road runner connection. So only one computer will get an IP from Road runner.

with the router, you're creating your own private internal network.

The router gets the IP from Road runner and then when you connect to the internal (switched) ports on the router you get a private IP assigned by the router's internal dhcp server.
