I don't totally understand the situation, but I'm asking the question using the best info I have. Currently, my company has a T1 connection. How its wired in, I have no clue. We are moving our servers upstairs (~100 feet line of sight distance, max), and that encompasses moving the firewall and such. The guy from BellSouth said that he was gonna use Cat3 for running the T1 line, and my boss is all freaked out cause he's like OMFG CAT5!!! Is it safe to assume that Cat3 is OK for this task?
I did a brief google on the subject and it seems to be OK, but I wanted to throw it by some of you more knowledgable guys to see if there might be any other hangups. I know that the transmission speed of the Cat3 is plenty high enough to handle T1, but just figured I'd ask... 12/28/2005 12:37:27 PM |

Cat3 to extend the T1 pipe to your new location?
If so then yes, it shouldn't matter as the T1 data rate is 1.53mbps. 12/28/2005 12:49:33 PM |

you might have him just run cat5 for shits in case you change the line later on.
Unless its really easy to run the cable in which case its moot. 12/28/2005 1:06:35 PM |

Thats pretty much it. Cat3 is only rated at a certain data rate and the T1 doesn't exceed it, so he shouldn't have any problems.12/28/2005 1:30:48 PM |

Tell the bastard to run cat5. It's good for future expansion and it costs the same as cat3.
Will it work: yes Should you do it: no 12/28/2005 10:16:26 PM |
