The new S-Class was just released a few months back (although not on sale in US yet) and they are already out with the S65 AMG. It will have its world debut at the NAIAS in Detroit in a couple of weeks.
Same crazy specs:
612 hp 738 lb-ft Top delimited speed of ~200 mph 0-60 mph in 3.8 sec (MB always says 4.4 sec, but the previous one was clocked in 3.8 sec by some mag) And last, but not least, every luxury and safety feature known to man
Don't know about others, but I am still kind of partial to the previous gen S65 AMG. [and S-Class in general]

^ the M5 is NOT competition for the S-Class performance models.
It is competition for the E55 AMG, and maybe the CLS55 AMG. There is no price difference now. Comparing the S65 with the M5 is beyond ridiculous.
Either way, if you are talking about straight-line performance, the MBs are winners (including the S55 and S65). M5 in 4.5, the E55/S55/ClS55 in 4.2, and the S65 in 3.8. And the gap widens even more when you reach speeds beyond 100 and 150 mph.
In the twisties, yeah the M5 edges out a bit. 12/29/2005 10:40:51 AM |

The older model is more attractive overall IMO, but the newer one has more powerful styling, and is less boring in the back half. 12/29/2005 10:47:53 AM |

I like the new look. A bit more aggressive while maintaining clean lines.

Did MB hire GM's former interior designers?
That interior looks like a buick. 12/29/2005 1:23:41 PM |

a bit? are you kidding me. The car looks alright I have just never been a fan of MB. They do serve there purpose well though. I just think its stupid to put a fuck ton of power in a car and not have the suspension to handle it. I'm a bit biased though.12/29/2005 1:46:29 PM |

nice, and yeah the m5 is not in the same class as the s65.
When the m7 comes out we will see how they match up. 12/29/2005 6:24:45 PM |

Actually, I'll just take one of these, thanks.
"Only" 450 hp out of its V10, and a rather leisurely 5.1 sec to 60 mph, but it leaves the others behind aesthetically. And I'm a somewhat admitted Audi fanboy in the first place. 12/29/2005 11:11:02 PM |

Aesthetically, have to agree.
In the large full-size car category, among the Germans, Audi A8 looks tons better than BMW 7-series, new MB S-Class, and the VW Phaeton.
If you include other European cars as well, I would have to go with the Jaguar XJ Portfolio (or XJR), or the Maserati Quattroporte. (and to some degree the Bentley Continental Flying Spur as well)
And they are no slouches either.

And what does the BMW 7-Series or Audi A8 or the Phaeton have?

P.S. As far as interiors go, MB used to have good interiors, but now they suck. BMW are decent, but among the large Germans, Phaeton has the best interior, closely followed by Audi A8. The Maserati and the Jag have gorgeous interiors as well.
Maserati Quattroporte:
And here is the most gorgeous full-size luxury car of all time, Jaguar Super V8 Portfolio, save perhaps the Bently Arnage T:

Damn, how could I forget the Jag? You're right, it's a knockout.
Its interior actually has much more of a traditional flavor to it than the others, which isn't a bad thing in my opinion. The ring of 500 buttons around the nav screen is a bit unsettling though!

Produces 500 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. Engineered to rev, with a redline of 8,250 with 100 horsepower per liter of displacement. Designed for maximum stiffness and minimum vibration.
I'll take one of these.

Here's an idea. I'm gonna pick a car thats not even close to the same class as the vehicle we're talking about in this thread, OR I'll pick a car thats not even in existance, nor will ever be in production, and say I'll take that car 12/30/2005 1:37:26 PM |

i dont think you can easily say the m7 wont exist and when it does it will look better and perform better than the s65
and i hate when people say these cars needs manual gearboxes, theres no reason a 600hp+ luxury cruiser needs a stick 12/30/2005 8:05:00 PM |

most newer AMG cars are 11 sec cars. so power wise, they are well beyond a "good performance car".12/30/2005 8:19:33 PM |

ive obviously never personally driven them, but all the reviews say they dont feel as crisp and responsive as the comparable bmw's i think thats what they were talking about, giving the driver more feedback 12/30/2005 8:48:35 PM |
