So I want to put something on a page that allows users to compute a numeric total by entering some different numbers and clicking a button to generate the total in a format like so:

[] is a text field

I want:
This many [A]
+ this amount [B] default = 0
+ this amount [C] default = 0
= This total [output] output = A*0.5+B+C
|Calculate total button|

What should I even be looking up to try and figure this out?

Pick a scripting language of your choice. Java will probably be the most common approach. As a plus, it can all run on the client side.

javascript would probably be easiest and just use the onClick function in the button tag
