Something new or used, but I am basically looking for a resonating banjo with a tone ring and a decent amount of weight to it. I have been stuck with a johnson since... forever, and I would love to upgrade to a gibson/deering. Nothing fancy, just a good quality banjo that will last a long time.

I am thinking of just saving up and getting the deering siera. If anyone has a used one of those that they are looking to sell, I am very interested.

There's a store in Wendell that has a nice selection:

Decently priced as well.

That's where I got my 2004 Deering Sierra(like new condition - one owner, never played) for $1100 with free installation of railroad spikes + hardshell case + extras.

Very nice sounding banjo.

I think he's got a new one in right now so call him up and get a price.

If you get the right one it does.... top end Gold Tones are awesome

I know deering is good as well.

What are some other top-notch banjo brands. I assume Gibson makes a great one too. Any others?

There are many good banjo makers out there.

There's a huge niche market of custom banjo luthiers.

The more common names are: Gibson, Goldtone, Deering, Stelling, etc.

anyhting over a grand is prolly too high. I am not a musician by any means, I just love to play it, therefore, I don't need a high end quality banjo just one that doesn't require me tuning every five minutes, and one that is not bloody hell on my left hand. Trying to bar chords or playing up the neck on mine is excessively difficult.

I used to live in boone, and there is a shop up there that is offering a high quality gold tone at about 650. I am thinking of going for it.

bttt, still looking, blah blah blah.

I sort of spent a bunch of time playing a deering last weekend and was completely sold. It has such a unique sound to it, but more importantly to me, it was verrrryyy easy to play. Almost effortless. So, if anyone has a used one to get rid of, and assuming that it is good condition, I can give you 750 for it.
